Thank you Willoughby Council, Nikki Zeng and Amanda Warrington for an excellent small business mentoring course. Thoroughly enjoyed those 5 weeks delving into all the aspects of small business, and also meeting really lovely, down to earth business owners in our area, sharing our experiences and networking to support mutual business development. We are so grateful to have such a supportive council in Willoughby, and the knowledge and expertise shared by Amanda was very useful - already enabling various changes. 💪🙏

But where are the weights? You’re looking at them! 😁 Just because you can’t see the dumbbells, doesn’t mean you’re not lifting.

When you’re pushing or pulling the Pilates straps, you’re working against spring resistance. The springs create an external load that your muscles have to overcome- just like other forms of resistance training.

Resistance is resistance. It doesn’t have to look like a dumbbell to challenge your muscles.

As spring resistance is increased, the muscles are required to produce more force. Over time, progressively increasing resistance, repetitions, range of motion or exercise difficulty can provide progressive overload - a fundamental principle of developing muscular strength and capacity.

And there are some advantages to using springs:

• Resistance can be adjusted very precisely to suit the individuals goals.
• The straps allow you to train the upper body without necessarily having to grip and hold a heavy dumbbell.
• This can be particularly useful for people who find gripping weights uncomfortable, including some people with wrist pain or carpal tunnel syndrome - although exercises should always be individualised to the person’s symptoms and clinical advice.
• You can challenge the upper body without necessarily having to lift heavy weights overhead, which can be useful for people who aren’t comfortable with overhead loading.
• Springs provide resistance throughout the movement, requiring the muscles to produce and control force, including during the return phase.
• And because Pilates exercises often involve the trunk, pelvis and limbs working together, you’re developing not only strength but also stability, coordination and muscular control.

The important thing is this:

Strength training is defined by the resistance placed on the muscles - not by whether you can see a dumbbell.

Dumbbells, barbells, cables, machines, body weight and Pilates springs can all be used to progressively challenge the musculoskeletal system.
Depending on the style of Pilates class you attend, determines the goal and outcome of the session.

Reformer Pilates is used to complement and enhance sports performance by developing the physical qualities athletes rely on across multiple functional areas including agility, balance, stability, strength, coordination and body control.

Today we did agility testing challenging the ability to accelerate, decelerate, change direction and respond quickly while maintaining control.

The Reformer can help develop the foundations behind these movements:

• Core & trunk control : maintaining stability during dynamic movement
• Single-leg strength & stability : supporting deceleration, change of direction and re-acceleration
• Proprioception & body awareness : improving awareness of body position and movement
• Dynamic balance : controlling the body while moving through different positions
• Hip, knee & ankle control : supporting efficient movement and force transfer
• Strength through different ranges of motion : preparing the body for the varied positions and demands of sport

Agility is the ability to perceive, react, change direction and control movement. It’s not just speed per se.

Reformer Pilates builds the movement capacity that allows athletes to perform with greater control and efficiency.

Pilates is often associated with flexibility, posture and controlled movement, but its benefits extend far beyond these. This week we’ve been putting our Pilates conditioning to the test using laser measurements for absolute precision.

The strength, stability, balance, coordination and body awareness developed through Reformer Pilates can help your body perform other functional movements more efficiently.

Think about the demands of sport:
🏃‍♀️ Running and changing direction
🎾 Rotating and reaching
⛳️ Generating power through the hips and trunk
🏋🏼‍♀️ Lifting, pushing and pulling
⛷️ Controlling your body through different positions

These movements require more than just strength. They require control, stability, mobility and the ability to coordinate multiple parts of the body together.

That’s where Pilates can complement sport and other forms of exercise.

It can help build the movement foundations that allow you to perform, adapt and generate force more effectively …potentially enhancing sporting performance while also helping you move more confidently in everyday life.💪👌

You don’t train Pilates just to get better at Pilates.
You train your body so it can do more outside the studio. Elite athletes from David Beckham, LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo all use Reformer Pilates as part of their regular body conditioning. Message us to find out which session type suits your needs.

Your muscles don’t know whether the resistance is coming from a dumbbell, a weight machine or a Pilates spring. They just know they have to work against resistance.

In a traditional gym, you might push a weight away, pull a weight towards you, or lift a dumbbell. On the Reformer, the same challenge is created by pushing against the springs.

The springs are pulling the carriage in the opposite direction, so your muscles have to work to move it, control it and sometimes hold it still.

It’s actually more challenging than traditional lifting of dumbbells because the resistance your body experiences also depends on where your body is positioned, your leverage, the angle you’re working at and how much spring resistance is being used PLUS the moving surface. The moving surface is what creates neuromuscular connections because your brain has more reference points rather than two dimensional reference points as in you versus the floor you and two dimensions.
