What a weekend for our UJJ Matraville team at the NSWBJJF Winter Cup.
We had a smaller crew competing this time, but every single athlete showed up ready to fight. Our kids stepped onto those mats with courage, heart, and determination. Some didn’t come away with the win they hoped for, but we couldn’t be prouder of them for stepping up, testing themselves, and gaining the kind of experience that truly elevates their Jiu‑Jitsu.
A special shout‑out to Cody Garcia, who delivered two dominant wins in under two minutes combined. At just 10 years old, he’s showing everyone what hard work, composure, and grit look like.
Another standout performance came from Maya, who earned her first ever gold medal in the Juvenile division. She locked in one of the most twisted-looking Americanas we’ve ever seen — even the crowd flinched — but her opponent refused to tap, causing a moment of confusion mid‑fight. Maya stayed composed, reset, and finished strong to secure the win. An incredible effort and a well‑deserved gold.
Our adults weren’t going to be shown up by the kids either. They fought some tough matches, with the highlight coming from Jaedon, Cody’s brother, who dominated his first fight and racked up over 20 points against his opponent. He didn’t come home with the gold this time, but a limited edition 25‑year NSWBJJF anniversary bronze medal was just as special — and well earned.
Well done to all our competitors. Your courage, effort, and team spirit make us incredibly proud. Every time you step onto the mats, you represent our academy with heart. 👊🏼💪🏼🥋
Congratulations to all our medalists 👏🏻👏🏻

Our mid-year seminar with 4th-degree black belt Professor Robert Naumoski was an absolute hit with the team! Rob showcased some incredible details on chaining together armbars, triangles, and omoplatas, leaving everyone buzzing for days about how to integrate these sequences into their game.
A massive congratulations to Cruize Turay on being awarded his well-deserved Blue Belt!

Cruize has been an absolute monster on the mats since he and his three kids first walked through our doors five years ago. He picked up the gentle art fast, dominating his very first competition to take home the gold after only a short time training.
As it so often does, though, life threw some heavy obstacles his way. Between navigating medical concerns, facing personal hardships, and relocating down to Ulladulla, just getting to the mats became a massive challenge. Yet, Cruize refused to quit. He kept training whenever and wherever he could, culminating in another spectacular gold-medal performance at the Wollongong Open earlier this year.
Medals and accolades are great, but it’s the hardships faced and the sheer perseverance shown that make wrapping that next belt around your waist so much sweeter.
Congratulations, Cruize! 💪🏼🥋

🌺 Anzac Day 🌿 Rā o Ngā Hōia
"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."
Today we stand together to honour the legacy of our service men and women. We reflect with gratitude on their bravery and the freedoms we enjoy today because of their sacrifice.
Please note that there will be no classes today. We encourage our community to attend local services and share in this day of remembrance.
With Anzac Day also being observed this year on Monday 27th April, classes will resume Tuesday 28th April.

Black Belt Masters back at it 🔥
returns for his fourth Subversion appearance. After a disappointing loss last time out, he’s set on getting back into the win column. One of the most active Masters black belts on the circuit, there’s no slowing down for the Wollongong native as he looks to start the year strong.
makes his second appearance at Subversion and is hunting for his first win. We haven’t seen him since the Sub City Series, but he’s known for his tough, gritty style. He’ll pose some real problems for Grant as he aims to edge this one on March 14.

🇦🇺 A great day out at South Maroubra
Our Jiu Jitsu family traded the mats for the sand today to celebrate Australia Day. It was a perfect day down at South Maroubra beach—plenty of picanha on the BBQ, the classic sausage sizzle, and a few too many lamingtons.
We even managed a game of backyard cricket to keep the traditions alive. 🏏
It’s always great to catch up with everyone and their families outside of the gym. It’s these moments off the mats that really make our community what it is.
Thanks to everyone who came down and shared the day with us.
