Swanners Show Incredible Character in Extraordinary Semi-Final Battle
Swan Hill S.C. travelled to Echuca on Sunday determined to achieve something they had been unable to do at any stage of the 2026 season — defeat Colts United.
What followed was a remarkable game of football that had everything: controversy, red cards, injury, adversity, an emergency goalkeeper and an extraordinary comeback that ultimately fell agonisingly short.
Colts United entered the contest with a full-strength squad, while Swan Hill were forced into a late reshuffle after losing first-choice midfielder Ethan Drummond before kick-off. Sam Tate stepped into the starting side on the left of midfield.
The conditions were extremely windy, with Colts having the advantage of the strong wind during the opening half.
Freak Goal Sets the Tone
The opening goal arrived inside the first 10 minutes — and it was one that will be talked about for some time.
After stopping a Swan Hill attack, the Colts goalkeeper launched a long goal kick downfield. The strong wind carried the ball far beyond its expected distance. It bounced once outside the Swan Hill penalty area before sailing over goalkeeper Riley McCosh, who had been caught off his line.
It was a freak goal, but Colts suddenly had a 1–0 advantage.
Swan Hill responded by lifting the intensity and quickly turned the contest into a physical battle. Elvis Presley was shown a yellow card following a strong challenge, but the Swanners continued to press despite playing into the wind.
Their pressure soon paid off.
Swan Hill won a corner, and the delivery found captain Cooper Fox lurking near the back post. Fox calmly finished the opportunity to bring Swan Hill level at 1–1.
Two Red Cards Change Everything
Unfortunately, the momentum shifted dramatically only minutes later.
Following an altercation with a Colts player, Sam Tate was shown a straight red card for pushing his opponent.
With only around 20 minutes played, Swan Hill were down to 10 men.
The Swanners were forced to reorganise into a more defensive shape, while Colts began to use their numerical advantage and the strong wind to push forward.
The pressure eventually produced another major moment.
A Colts shot appeared certain to find the net until Dave Le Poidevin instinctively blocked the ball with his hand. The intervention prevented a goal but resulted in a straight red card and a penalty.
Colts converted from the spot to restore their lead at 2–1.
Swan Hill were now down to nine players.
Things went from bad to worse when goalkeeper Riley McCosh was injured in a collision with a Colts striker around the 35-minute mark and was unable to continue.
Incredibly, Swan Hill had lost three players in the opening half — two to red cards and one through injury.
Players were forced into unfamiliar positions as the Swanners battled to maintain their structure against a Colts side with two extra players.
Colts eventually found another goal before half-time, sending Swan Hill into the break trailing 3–1.
Di Palma’s Half-Time Message
What happened in the Swan Hill rooms at half-time became the turning point of the match.
Following a spirited and emotional message from coach Tony Di Palma, the Swanners emerged for the second half a completely different side.
Despite having only nine players, no recognised goalkeeper and a two-goal deficit, Swan Hill attacked the second half with tremendous determination.
With the wind now in their favour, every player ran themselves into the ground.
Defensively, the Swanners were outstanding.
Jai Wright stepped into goal despite having no goalkeeping experience and performed admirably, while the Swan Hill defence refused to allow Colts to make their two-player advantage count.
At the other end, Colts increasingly concentrated their attention on striker Liam Baldwin, regularly surrounding him with multiple defenders.
Swan Hill needed something different.
Tactical Change Sparks Incredible Comeback
As the second half settled into a pattern, Swan Hill made a tactical change designed to disrupt the Colts defence.
Baldwin was withdrawn, Elvis Presley moved forward into the striker’s role to utilise his tremendous work rate, while Co-Coach and emergency player Wiseman Sibanda entered on the right wing.
The change had an immediate impact.
Colts struggled to adjust to the new attacking structure.
Then came Cooper Fox.
Fox struck twice in approximately 10 minutes, completing a sensational hat-trick and dragging Swan Hill all the way back from 3–1 down to 3–3.
Suddenly, against all odds, the Swanners were level.
Fox’s equaliser proved controversial, with Colts strongly protesting the decision. One Colts defender took his protests too far and was shown a red card, reducing Colts to 10 men.
With approximately five minutes remaining, an extraordinary comeback victory suddenly looked possible.
Cruel Ending
Colts responded by throwing players forward in search of a winner.
With approximately two minutes remaining, their striker fired a shot towards the Swan Hill goal.
Jai Wright initially made the save, only for the ball to rebound off him, strike the post and unfortunately find its way into the net.
After everything Swan Hill had done to fight back, Colts had regained the lead at 4–3.
There was barely enough time for the Swanners to respond before the final whistle sounded.

A Scoreline That Doesn’t Tell the Story
This truly was a game of two halves.
The first half was incredibly difficult and full of adversity. Swan Hill lost a first-choice midfielder before kick-off, conceded a freak wind-assisted goal, received two red cards and then lost their goalkeeper to injury.
At half-time, the Swanners were down to nine players and trailing 3–1.
What followed was one of the most courageous second-half performances of the season.
Playing with nine men and an emergency goalkeeper, Swan Hill not only prevented Colts from taking complete control but fought their way back from two goals down to level the match at 3–3.
Cooper Fox produced an outstanding individual performance, completing a remarkable hat-trick from midfield.
But the effort went far beyond one player.

Fox truly stepped up when his team needed him most. A hat-trick from midfield tells the story, and the result speaks for itself. A sensational performance from the Swan Hill captain.
Noah Drummond
Playing through a knee injury, Noah produced an outstanding defensive performance and showed tremendous courage and commitment throughout the contest.
Elvis Presley
An exceptional work rate from Elvis. His passion, determination and willingness to keep running and fighting never disappeared. He played like the result meant everything.
Coach’s Message
Coach Tony Di Palma thanked his players for their gallant effort and praised the character they showed after facing almost every possible setback during the match.
He also expressed his appreciation to Co-Coach Wiseman Sibanda for his assistance and commitment throughout the season.
Although the result was disappointing, the performance demonstrated the spirit within the Swan Hill squad.
