In all honesty I love all of the photos Lizzie did of the event

But you can tell when Kianni and I are feeling safe and free.

Massive thanks to AusMumpreneur and Women Changing the World events for always looking after us and ensuring we do feel this safe, happy and free 🩷🩷

I’m quite comfortable with the fact that I’ll probably never have a ridiculous amount of money sitting in my bank account.

And that’s not because I’m not a good businesswoman.

It’s not because I don’t understand strategy, growth or how to make money.

It’s because this is what I make money for.

Today, headspace Caloundra held their Teens Rainbow Social at The Nest after I invited them to do so, for free, ongoing.

A free space for LGBTQI+ young people to come together, play games, hang out, cuddle Queenie and Sweetie, laugh loudly and just… be.

I stayed out of the way because their conversations are theirs, not mine.

But I sat in the sensory room and listened to these huge bursts of laughter coming through the walls while they played Uno and Jenga.

And I had a little cry.

Because this is why I built The Nest.

This is why I work as hard as I do.

I want to make enough money to have buildings with sensory rooms that I can open the doors to.

I want to pay the bills so that sometimes the answer can simply be, “Yes. You can use our space.”

I want to link arms with organisations like headspace Caloundra so that something a young person might desperately need doesn’t always have to come with an invoice attached to it.

Other people might build businesses because they want the number in the bank account to keep getting bigger. I absolutely respect that… but as try as I have to change this… thas never been the bit that lights me up.

I make money so I can make things happen.

And believe me, the list of things I still want to make happen is long.

But today was a big one.

Today felt monumental.

Because somewhere inside a building I once only imagined creating, a group of LGBTQI+ young people were laughing their heads off together.

They were safe.

They were wanted.

They had somewhere to be.

And they get to come back in the next Monday session it’s run.

That feels a hell of a lot like success to me. 🌈

Sunday for me was submitting my last 3 x assessments for this term for my Masters 🎉🎉🎉

Having TWO x naps in between as I literally couldn’t keep my eyes open both times 🫩🥱😴

Making sure my baby was keeping hydrated 💧

And now after pressing the last “send” I’m watching this… and my heart feels so full 🤍🤍

One more term to go and I get my Sundays back 🏄‍♀️🌊 I started my Master in November last year… and as long as I pass, lol, I just have my placement and 1 subject to go!!

I’m back from Sydney, still trying to get through the mountain of emails waiting for me, and I found this little gem sitting in there…

Actually - two little gems.

I’ve been named a finalist in two categories at the Stevie® Awards for Women in Business:

Maverick of the Year
and
Social Change Maker of the Year – Disability

And they feel like two sides of the same work.

Maverick of the Year reflects the part of me that keeps questioning the things we’ve been told are simply “how it’s done.”

Why should people have to adapt themselves to services, systems and environments that were never designed with them in mind?

Why should accessibility be something we add only after someone struggles?

Why should support require people to become easier, quieter, more predictable or less themselves?

I’m interested in what becomes possible when we stop forcing people to fit what isn’t working - and start building something that actually works for them.

And Social Change Maker of the Year – Disability reflects what happens when those questions become more than ideas.

They become organisations.
Services.
Technology.
Better access.
Books, tools and practitioner learning.
Different ways of thinking about disability, support, capacity and what it means for a person to remain the authority over their own life.

That work has become Neurodivergent Empowered, The Nest, Sparkly Aliens Inc. and FREE 2B ME.

I don’t want to spend my life simply pointing at systems that aren’t working.
I want to build the alternatives.

So finding out I’m an international finalist for both Maverick of the Year and Social Change Maker of the Year – Disability feels pretty bloody special.

Sadly, for the third year in a row, we won’t be attending the awards in person in the US, because it is not safe for us to do so.
That part is genuinely disappointing.

But the recognition still means a lot, and I’m incredibly proud of the work these nominations represent.

Apparently refusing to accept “that’s just how it’s done” has its moments. 😆

{You can imagine little Tan driving everyone crazy with, "But whyyyyyyyy?"} 🤣🤣🤣

Less fixing. More living.

Thank you so much Mel for coming along to hang out with Kianni while I did my top 100 Australian Mums in Business entrance and while I spoke at the AusMumpreneur Gala Dinner.

I loved the theme and how everyone looks out for, and accomodate Kianni, and that I’m able to get her in rooms that enable her own unique star to shine ✨

Thank you Peace Mitchell and Katy Garner for putting on such an amazing event as always xx
