Introducing Senpai Ashton (Senior Shodan) and Senpai Ethan (Junior Shodan) 🥋

Congratulations and well done to the new shodans on their efforts yesterday and in the months leading up to today, and indeed, on the many years they've been training (over nine and eight years, respectively).

Senpai Ashton becomes Sunnybank's first student to be promoted from Junior Shodan to Senior Shodan after his 2024 Junior Shodan promotion.

A huge thank you to all of the black belts, students (past and present), parents and supporters who helped the candidates prepare for and push through their promotion.

A special thank you to both Shuseki Shihan Murray and Kyoshi Suzana for their help organising the promotion and coming to support, and to Jun Shihan Darek for accepting the invitation to come and take the promotion and share his knowledge in a self-defence seminar.

I was very fortunate to be Jun Shihan Darek's first Shodan at Bayside Dojo in 2007, and it was an absolute honour to have him conduct the first black belt promotion hosted by Seido Sunnybank.

The Zen Shin energy continues! 🥋

Senpai Matt, from Thornbury, was in Brisbane for work and brought his gi to come and help us teach the juniors class and join in our general and black belt classes.

Sensei Sam and Senpai Matt first met in New York, last month, at Zen Shin, but their histories are more intertwined.

When Sensei Sam moved from New Zealand to Australia in 2003 and joined Bayside dojo, he would travel with Jun Shihan Darek’s friend, Jun Shihan Giordano, via car/train/bike/train to Thornbury dojo on Saturday mornings to train. It was here that he first met Sensei Doug.

Sensei Doug and Senpai Matt also met at Thornbury dojo and last night was the first time they had caught up in seven years!

Thank you Senpai Matt for making the effort to come and train with us, we look forward to visiting you in Thornbury 🙏🏽

Forgot to take a photo at training, so here is a pic of the Aussie team at Zen Shin and a post-training dinner pic.
