1 week out from the Flying Fifteen International - Queensland State Championships…. What better way to get some start practice in by competing in the Merv Anderson Sprint Series of races. This Sunday (27th) SYC is running this event and plans to run as many short-course starts as possible.

Early high tide of 2.22m at 0945hrs - so first Warning Signal at 1000hrs

All boats are welcome, not just Flying Fifteens.

Tin Can Bay Yacht Club will be hosting the State Championships for Flying Fifteens on 3-4 October. A big thanks to the Tin Can Bay Country Club for sponsoring the event.

We look forward to welcoming those from other Queensland clubs and beyond and enjoying some strong competition and fun out on the water.

2026 Queensland Sailing Awards LIFETIME ACHEVIMENT Award
🏆 Congratulations to Adrian Finglas, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron

For more than four decades, Adrian Finglas has made an outstanding contribution to sailing as a champion sailor, coach, mentor and leader, inspiring generations of athletes. After winning the 1983 Australian Sabot National Championship, he went on to become an Australian Champion across multiple classes and campaigned for selection in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games in the 470 class.

His international sailing career included the San Diego America's Cup, South African Maxi One Design Around the Island Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Around Sweden Race, Sweden to Kiel Race, and numerous Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Races.

A three-time Yachting Queensland Sailor of the Year and three-time Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Sailor of the Year, Adrian's greatest legacy is his coaching. He has developed pathways that have produced National Champions, Youth World Champions, World Champions, Olympians and Paralympians. As Head Coach of the Queensland Academy of Sport Sailing Program (2007-2013), he built a highly successful youth performance program and later served as an Australian Olympic Coach at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He also coached Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch to Paralympic Silver in Beijing 2008 and Gold in London 2012 in the SKUD 18 class.

First day of the 2026/27 Sailing Season this Sunday at Sandgate Yacht Club.
Starting with the first few races of the Summer Series with the first Start at 1100hrs. High Tide of 2.2m at 1050.

Big thank you to the Sandgate Yacht Club members William Wheatley and Darryl who formed a shadow fleet to support Scouts sailing on an overnight adventure.

Thank you to all of our wonderful members and friends that joined SYC to celebrate the 2026/27 sailing season Opening Day and Blessing of the Fleet.

The morning began with a social morning tea with some lovely pastries provided by Maria from The Deck Bar Shorncliffe. Those attending gathered around the boats on the rigging lawn to be welcomed by Commodore Chris who introduced Chaplain David Taylor to lead the homily and blessing. Vessels performed a sail past which included representatives from Brownsea Water Activities Centre. The day was completed with a social lunch.

The first event of the season will be the first races of the Summer Series, a performance handicap event, on 13 September.

Sandgate Yacht Club is celebrating the 2026/27 Sailing Season Opening Day this Sunday 30th August. A morning tea will commence upstairs in the Clubhouse around 10-10.30.
Vessels are requested to be arranged on the rigging lawn by 1100hrs for the traditional Blessing of the Fleet. This will be followed by a Sail Past and those wishing to participate in a day’s sail will be started and finished from the pontoon.
High tide of 2.10m at 1045hrs.

Our previous event held on 16 August, was the final race of the 2026 Winter Series. With an encouraging 6 boats challenging the start of the first race, attrition from stronger SE’ly took its toll on a few boats and crews. The breeze was shifty and rewarded the teams that sailed tactically.
