πŸŽ₯ Child safety starts before the first whistle.

Creating a child-safe club isn't just about responding to issues - it's about putting the right foundations in place from the very beginning.

In this short video, child safeguarding expert Sam Dellamarta explains why embedding child safety into your club's recruitment, induction and coach appointment processes is one of the most effective ways to build a positive, safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

By taking a proactive approach, clubs can strengthen their culture, attract the right people and reduce the risk of issues arising in the future.

We love getting out and sitting down with our local clubs and associations to understand their goals, work through the challenges and help put the right foundations in place for the future. πŸ’ͺ

Recently, our Project Officer Jess caught up with the Benalla Netball to talk all things governance and identify opportunities to strengthen their processes and support the association moving forward.

Good governance might happen behind the scenes, but it plays a huge role in building strong, sustainable clubs and associations that can continue delivering great opportunities for their members and the wider community.

We’re looking forward to working alongside the Benalla Netball over the coming months and seeing their plans come to life!

The committee has been working tirelessly in the background to strengthen our processes and all the fun things governance.

Part of this was meeting with Jess from Valley Sport. We are so excited to work with her over the coming months, improving what we have and incorporating what we don’t, allowing for everyone to reap the benefits of a stronger association.

A special thank you to the Benalla Bowls Club Inc for hosting this meeting, and for their regular accommodation of Benalla Netball Association committee meetings, and our upcoming AGM.

Community sport has the power to bring people together.

It builds confidence, creates connection and helps people feel like they belong. But for too many people, experiences of racism and exclusion mean those benefits aren’t shared equally.

Community sport should be a place where everyone feels welcome. Yet research found that 56% of survey respondents had experienced or witnessed racism in community sport, with 75% of those incidents occurring within the past 12 months.

That’s why VicHealth developed Set The Standard.

Set The Standard aims to connect coaches and club leaders across Victoria to practical tools, free resources, and provide access to subsidised anti-racism training to help build healthier, more welcoming, and culturally safe sporting environments.

Because when people feel safe, respected, and valued, everyone benefits.

🌏 Happy International Youth Day!

Today we celebrate the young people in our communities - their ideas, achievements, contributions and the important role they play in shaping the future.

International Youth Day is also an opportunity to recognise the importance of creating spaces where young people feel connected, supported and empowered to get involved - something community sport can play a huge role in.

πŸŽ™οΈ To mark the day, we've released a special episode of From the Mountains to the Murray, shining a spotlight on young people and the opportunities available across our region.

This week, we take a closer look at Connecting Youth Expo '26, coming to the Shepparton Showgrounds on Saturday 5 September, and chat about how sporting clubs, community groups and organisations can help young people find their place, make connections and discover new opportunities.

πŸŽ₯ Good child safety starts with trust.

Meet Sam Dellamarta - one of Australia's leading child safeguarding experts, helping community sporting clubs strengthen their child safety practices through practical, achievable solutions.

In this short video, Sam explains why good record keeping, open communication, and creating an environment where people feel safe to speak up are essential to protecting children and young people in sport.

When volunteers, parents, players and members are confident to raise concerns, clubs are better equipped to identify risks early and respond appropriately.
