A Safe Environment for Everyone
At the Greater Shepparton Basketball Association, there is one principle that sits above everything else we do:
Basketball must be a safe environment for everyone.
While we have a range of policies covering child safety, member protection, discipline, codes of conduct and behaviour, they are all guided by one simple expectation – that every person who comes to basketball has the right to feel safe.
That includes our:
• Children and young people
• Players
• Parents and families
• Spectators
• Coaches
• Team managers
• Referees and officials
• Staff
• Volunteers
Everyone has the right to feel safe.
Unfortunately, we have recently experienced an increasing number of incidents where the actions of a very small number of individuals have compromised that safety. These incidents have included threatening, abusive and, in some cases, physically aggressive behaviour.
This behaviour is completely unacceptable.
No game, decision or disagreement is ever more important than the safety and wellbeing of the people around us.
Creating a safe environment is not solely the responsibility of the Committee of Management, our staff or our officials. It is the responsibility of every single person who walks through our doors. Every interaction, every conversation and every decision contributes to the culture we create together.
The GSBA will continue to take firm action where individuals compromise the safety of others. Anyone whose behaviour threatens or undermines a safe environment should expect to be excluded from basketball activities.
As a community, let's remember why we are here.
Support our players.
Respect our officials.
Encourage our volunteers.
Treat each other with kindness.
Help make basketball a place where every person feels welcome, valued and, above all else, safe.
Thank you to the overwhelming majority of our basketball community who demonstrate these values every day. Your support, respect and positive example are what make our Association such a great place to be.
Safe Environment for All – Everyone's Responsibility.
