“ROLLING ALONG”
by Wrong Bias - 31st August 2026
OPENING DAY
Well, with that time of the year fast approaching as we looked forward to dusting of our oddly shaped marbles that we call bowls and getting our fair share of vitamin “D” out on the greens and competing in our second season in the top echelon as well as other divisions of Goulburn Valley Weekend and Midweek Pennant competitions fast approaches.
There were around 30 members in attendance last Saturday the Seymour VRI commenced the new season with the traditional “Opening Day” formalities under a clear blue sky, the day began with members enjoying a fare of a BBQ lunch followed by formalities of reigning club champions rolling the first Jack, Jane Wilson and first bowl Wayne Noonan to declare the season officially opened before an enjoyable social game of bowls to get the kinks out of the system following the long winter sojourn.
Following the presentation of an address to the assembled members of his projection for the club over the upcoming season, President Ian, as tradition demands at this club, offered the hospitality of his “Presidents Card” over the bar for a limited time for those members present, thoughts then turned to enjoying those refreshments and talk of upcoming footy finals.
“SUPER VETERAN” MARIO
Congratulations go to our newest SUPER VETERAN Mario Furletti, following his “Special” birthday earlier in August, as he was presented with his “Super Veteran” Lapel Badge by Club President Ian Cashill, a Super Veteran is recognised by Bowls Victoria when a bowler reaches 80 years of age with a lapel badge.
Mario has now joined his brother Jimmy to receive this significant honour
FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIALS
Our Friday night catering with Casserole, Pizza and Hot Dogs etc are very proving very successful so keep your eyes open for further upcoming social evenings
UPCOMING PRACTICE MATCHES
A reminder to all of our members that we need numbers for the fast-approaching practice matches, of which the selectors have organised one each week for the coming 4 weeks, so please help out the selectors and indicate your availability on the lists in the clubhouse. Those 4 games are – Saturday 5th September v Lancefield at VRI followed by Saturday 12th v Seymour at VRI for the S.A.D. Trophy then Sunday 20th September v Whittlesea at VRI for the Berry-Owen Trophy and finally Saturday 3rd October v Alexandra at Alex.

APPOINTMENT of CLUB COACH
It is with much pleasure that the Seymour VRI Bowling Club announce the appointment of David Ellis to the position of Seymour VRI Playing Coach for the coming 2026-27 bowls season.
David began playing bowls as an 18-year-old, and over the past 45 years has represented 6 clubs, been involved in winning 9 flags and spent 15 years at Lalor Bowls Clu, with and under Ian Ewing (Victorian State Coach) playing both Premier League and Division 1 in the Metropolitan Pennant Competition.
For the past 6 years David has played for the Broadford Bowling Club in the Central Highlands Playing Area, where he mentored a number of new players and many existing members, improving their game to a higher level.
Through his experiences in bowls, and with the support of the members it is hoped that he can develop new skills and give Seymour VRI Members a better understanding of different game situations, David is also an accredited umpire.
