Earning belt at Ako stands for something - based on a combination of technical knowledge, competency, consistent training and competition experience.

We run grading throughout the year, but if you have any questions about belt progression don’t hesitate to speak to one of our coaches.

This is what sixty minutes of non-stop rolling looks like.

One partner. No breaks. Kids and adults on the mat together and every single one of them finished it.

Tonight was the first time we opened Happy Hour up to our older juniors, and they came ready. No hesitation, no quitting early. Just an hour of honest work alongside the adults who've been doing this for years.

That's the standard at Ako.

First time on the mats? Wear comfortable activewear - shorts or tights and a t-shirt (pocketless shorts with no zips are ideal).

No shoes on the mats. If you stick around, we’ll help you sort a gi when you need one.

Every person who stepped on the mat today had one thing to do today.

They had to show up and compete.

Everyone did absolutely amazing, we are incredibly proud of everyone.

Kids and adults alike - showing up, shaking hands, and going to work against their own teammates. The technique was real. The sportsmanship was better. Watching people who train together genuinely push each other in competition - that's what this place is built for.

Proud of everyone who had a go today. That's not a small thing.

BJJ asks a lot of your body. Yoga can help you keep doing it well.

MOVE BETTER
Improved mobility through your hips, shoulders and spine can make a big difference on the mats.

BUILD BODY AWARENESS
Yoga teaches you to notice how your body moves, where you’re holding tension and how to control your positioning.

SUPPORT YOUR RECOVERY
Not every session needs to be high intensity. Yoga gives your body a chance to move, stretch and reset between harder training days.

WORK ON YOUR BREATHING
Staying calm and controlling your breathing when you’re under pressure? Pretty useful in BJJ.

KEEP YOUR BODY MOVING WELL
Strength matters. So does having the mobility and control to actually use it.

BJJ + yoga. They might look completely different, but they work very well together.

Yoga classes available at Ako, twice a week. Not a member? Ask us about how you can join our yoga classes.

Competition is one part of the journey, a chance to test skills, build courage and learn how to handle both wins and losses.

Most of the real work happens away from the podium. It’s in showing up when you don’t feel like it. Supporting your teammates. Building confidence, discipline and resilience.
Finding a community where you belong.

Some of our members love competing. Others may never compete at all. Both belong here.

At Ako, success isn’t measured by medals. It’s measured by growth, on and off the mats.
