What a fantastic day on Saturday! 🥋🇯🇵

We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Sensei Takeshi Uema from Okinawa for a special seminar focused on traditional Okinawan karate.

It was a great opportunity to step away from the usual training routine and explore the history, techniques and traditions that have shaped Okinawan karate over generations. There was so much knowledge to take away, and it was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and embracing the experience.

The attendance was fantastic, with a great mix of students, instructors and martial artists coming together on the mats. Days like this are a great reminder of how much there is still to learn, regardless of how long you’ve been training.

A huge thank you to Sensei Takeshi Uema for sharing his knowledge, experience and passion with us. 🙏

And thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a memorable day!

🥋 **“Sensei, is my child grading this time?”**

It’s probably one of the questions we get asked the most around grading time.

And we completely understand why parents ask. You want to see your child progress, get their next belt and feel proud of what they have achieved.

But sometimes the answer is **no**.

And here are some of the things that may be going through a Sensei’s mind...

👩 *“But they’ve been doing karate for 6 months, surely they should be grading?”*

🥋 *“They haven’t attended enough classes to learn everything they need to know.”*

👨 *“But they know all their kata at home!”*

🥋 *“They might know the kata, but they’re not yet performing it to the standard we expect in class.”*

👩 *“They've been practising heaps!”*

🥋 *“We need to see that effort and commitment in class as well.”*

👨 *“But their friend is grading…”*

🥋 *“Every student progresses at their own pace. We don’t grade kids just because someone else is.”*

👩 *“They really want their next belt.”*

🥋 *“Wanting the belt is one thing. Earning it is another.”*

And sometimes it simply comes down to...

❌ Not enough attendance
❌ Not enough effort
❌ Not listening in class
❌ Technique not yet at the required standard
❌ Not remembering the required syllabus
❌ Attitude or behaviour needs improvement
❌ They simply need a little more time

**Grading is not automatic because you've been at karate for a certain amount of time.**

At Guy’s Karate School, we want our students to **earn their belts**, not simply collect them.

Sometimes the most important lesson a student can learn is that **you don't always get what you want when you want it.**

You keep turning up.
You keep working.
You listen to your Sensei.
You improve.

And when the time is right...

**You earn that belt. 🥋**

That feeling is worth so much more. ❤️

**Parents, trust your Sensei. We want your child to succeed just as much as you do.**

🥋 A night of learning outside the usual!

Last night we had the pleasure of welcoming Shihan Kym from Kaishin Taekwondo to the dojo for a great seminar with our students.

We worked through a building skill set of break falls, technical stand-ups and takedowns, incorporating pairing exercises that challenged everyone to apply the techniques in a practical way.

One of the things we love about martial arts is that there is always something new to learn. Every now and then, we like to introduce our students to different concepts, different approaches and different ways of moving.

It’s not about changing what we do — it’s about encouraging our students to keep an open mind when it comes to learning martial arts. New experiences challenge us, broaden our understanding and ultimately make us better martial artists.

🥋 SPECIAL GUEST INSTRUCTOR TONIGHT!🥋

We’re excited to welcome Shihan Kym from Kaishin Taekwondo to Guy’s Karate School tonight for our Teens & Adults class at 6:15pm!

Shihan Kym brings an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience and martial arts expertise to the mats, and we’re always excited when we get the opportunity to learn from instructors outside our own dojo.

Tonight is a great opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, learn something different and add some new tools to your martial arts journey.

Whether you’ve been training for years or are still finding your feet, there’s always something to learn from someone who has walked the path before you.

We can’t wait to have Shihan Kym on the mats tonight! 🔥🥋

For Terri, enrolling her two daughters at Guy’s Karate School has been about so much more than learning karate. 🥋❤️

They absolutely love coming to class, but one of the biggest changes has been seeing them find their people.

Making friends hasn’t always been easy for them, but since joining karate, they’ve built friendships, grown in confidence and found a place where they genuinely feel like they belong.

That’s one of the things we love most about our club. Yes, we teach karate — but we also create an environment where kids can connect, support each other and grow together.

Sometimes the biggest win isn’t the next belt… it’s walking through the doors excited to see your friends. ❤️

🥋 The road to Black Belt.

These young martial artists are putting in the work as they prepare for their Black Belt grading next month.

Black Belt isn’t about being the strongest, the fastest or the best fighter in the room.

It symbolises years of consistency, discipline, resilience and personal growth.

It represents all the classes they showed up to when they didn’t feel like it. The techniques they struggled with. The mistakes they made, learned from and tried again.

And perhaps most importantly, it represents the person they’ve become along the way.

The grading is just one day.

The journey to get there is what makes the Black Belt mean something.🥋

We’re incredibly proud of these young students and can’t wait to see them take on the challenge next month. 👊
