Last Friday saw the annual Brothers in the City rugby lunch on a beautiful day at L'Aqua in Darling Harbour. The day was a great success in terms of numbers attending and money raised for the club. MC and 400-game player Adrian Brannan once again did a fabulous job on the day with his deft handling of events and his running of the Q&A session with our guest speaker, ex-Wallaby Sam Scott Young.

The day also saw a number of presentations. Firstly, the Campion College scholarship award was presented to Sebastian Clare and the Australian Catholic University scholarship to Jaylen Steer. We also commemorated our friendly departure from our JV with Wakehurst through a presentation of a framed jersey to Wakehurst president and former Brothers player Sunny Martin as a way of expressing our gratitude to their support to us during tough(er) times. It was only appropriate that Karl Houghton presented it given the links he has also developed through playing with them.

And the club also took the opportunity to make a presentation to Tom Burns, ex-player, coach and life member in recognition of the the six premierships that he won as a coach or player - a club record. It was also fitting that Vinnie Byrne, a fixture of the club during those glory years, was also there to present it.

And finally many thanks to another club legend Ian 'Moose' Mears for once again putting it all together. The lunch is such an important part of the club's calendar for so many reasons and Ian is the glue that holds it all together.

And

We have been asked by the NSW Churches League/Inner West Harbour about interest in joining a new type of cricket competition this season. Details are as follows:

a. Mix of T20 and two-day games over consecutive Saturdays. Two day games can have a 15 man roster so different people can play on each Saturday if required.
b. Played between 1-4 pm on Saturdays from mid Sep to start March with Christmas/New Year off.
c. No age or experience limits. Don't have to be affiliated with Brothers Rugby club so friends/family all welcome

At the moment they are looking for Expressions of Interest only to see if the competition is viable. We already have some interest shown by the rugby players. If anyone is interested please advise me at [email protected] by COB Wed 24 August.

As I said we are seeking EOI only at this stage - more details to follow if the concept gets the green light, but this seems like a flexible cricket competition that may suit those wanting to play and represent the club, but not give up their entire summers.

Andrew’s funeral will be on Wednesday 19th August at 11.15am

It is with great sadness we share the news that Andrew passed with his family by his side early this Tuesday morning.

‘Big Andy’ played more than a 100 games for Brothers from the late 90’s to the early 10’s across all grades and was a member of the Premiership Winning 2010 Feisty 4ths Nicholson Cup Team. A team of close mates.

Andy lost his 18 month battle with pancreatic cancer but not without putting up a valiant and courageous fight.

Andrew is survived by his wife Liz and children Eloise, Ben and Cameron who we send our deepest sympathies and condolences.
