JUNIOR TRAINING ISN’T ABOUT FLOGGING THE ABSOLUTE S**T OUT OF THEM.

Anyone can make a kid tired.

Burpees.
Sprints.
More reps.
Less rest.

Eventually everyone ends up on the floor.

That doesn’t automatically make it good training.

For our juniors, the goal is to give them the right stimulus at the right time.

That means:
→ Appropriate load for their current ability

→ Enough volume to create adaptation, not bury them

→ Learning technique before chasing numbers

→ Progressing movements when they’re actually ready

→ Building strength, coordination, confidence and athleticism over time

Some sessions they’ll leave sweaty.

Some sessions they won’t.

Sweat isn’t the KPI. Progress is.

Especially with developing athletes, we’re playing the long game.

Teach them how to move.

Teach them how to train.

Make them stronger.

Keep them enjoying it.

Then gradually turn the dial up as their body earns the capacity to handle more.

Train juniors like developing athletes — not smaller adults who need to be punished into fitness.

That’s the difference between simply making them tired…
…and actually making them better.

Ever felt your knee cave in and just... give way? 😳

For years, ACL injuries got blamed on anatomy.

Wider hips. Bigger Q-angle. The story was: some bodies are just "built at risk."

That story's outdated.

A 2021 study followed 482 elite youth footballers. It found something different.

When training load spikes were managed — tracking sudden jumps in training/game volume — injury risk dropped significantly.

Not because anatomy changed. Because demand stopped outpacing capacity.

Picture a typical junior athlete's week:

→ Club training Tuesday and Thursday
→ Rep trial Saturday morning
→ School carnival Monday
→ Back into club Tuesday

No single session looks unreasonable. Stacked together? That's a load spike most programs were never built for.

Hormonal cycle timing still plays a role in some research. That's real. But it's one variable — not the root cause it was once treated as.

The shift: worry less about what you can't change (hips, s*x, growth patterns). Focus more on what you can:

→ Managing weekly load across every team an athlete plays for
→ Building landing mechanics and single-leg strength

Save this for a coach juggling a multi-team athlete. Or a parent who's been told it's "just her hips."
