Short greenside pitch

Quick demo here for a client during a short game lesson today.

What do you notice?

Anything you may or may not wish to include in your own action?

I just love all things short game. Always been one of my strongest parts of my game. Hours and hours spent around a chipping green as a kid playing up and down comps against my buddies for chocolate bars!

Played 3 holes with my 5 year old tonight.

Life can get busy and it’s easy to just skip having this time together after a big day. But now I’m back fit and swinging again, I am making a conscious effort to have him more involved in my day to day work.

And I would love for him to just grow up around this game more and that starts with me putting him in that environment.

And how good is golf. It’s so good to be back swinging! There is honestly no better feeling than a well struck iron shotšŸ”„

There’s a reason why pro golfers train this way: slow speed strips away everything speed can often hide.

You can’t fake sequencing or compensate with athleticism when you’re moving at 20%. It forces you to feel exactly where the club is and where your body needs to be through impact, the stuff that gets lost when you’re swinging normally.

Then you build back up. to 40%, 60% and then 80% blending that discipline with controlled tempo. And full speed is the test: can you keep the same feels and sequencing you built slow, now that everything’s happening fast?

This is exactly the kind of work that’s been huge for me as I’ve made a strong recovery from surgery. I can’t just jump to full speed and hope my swing holds up. I am rebuilding it in layers, prove each piece works before adding speed on top of it.

This drill takes a ton of discipline guys, but honestly it’s one of the best drills you can do when working on changes to your golf swing.

16 years old, English County Boys Finals at Lytham with the Nottinghamshire team. Can’t believe this is 25 years ago šŸ‘€

And yes, that’s hair.šŸ˜‚

So grateful this game came into my life at 13. Golf had me completely and by 17 I was down to plus 1.

What a ride it’s been since - from coaching, to golf club operations, spells managing restaurants, inside a gym at one point, and I’ll never forget the 3 months working in the outback where I almost died.

But every one of them has served me and helped shape the person I am today.

Crazy that I’m about to turn 42, and looking at this photo I don’t think that 16 yr old me would believe where it’s led. A career that’s touched almost every part of this game. So much learned along the way, and still learning.

I believe everything in life happens for a reason, at the right time. But I also know none of it shows up without chasing what you love and refusing to let go of it. So grateful to have built a very fulfilling 25 yr career so far around my passions, and I don’t take that for granted.

Here’s to the next 25 šŸ‘€šŸ‘“

The Faldo drill is a solid drill, but it doesn’t suit everyone exactly as it’s normally taught.

If you’re getting the club too far behind you early in the backswing, it can lead to chunks, blocks and the occasional hook (for some players). For others I don’t mind a slight inside takeaway, if it helps the downswing be on plane.

This is a snippet of an online lesson this morning, where I showed an academy member a simple way to adapt the Faldo drill using two alignment sticks so the club stays more on plane, making it much easier to deliver the club from in front of you on the downswing.

Share this with a friend who struggles with an inside takeawayšŸ‘

Comment PURE below and I’ll send you a drill to help you sequence your downswing with power šŸ‘‡

Most golfers think their swing falls apart at the top. It doesn’t. It falls apart when the arms and body are all out of sync.

The towel drill fixes that fast.

āœ… Towel under both armpits - this forces your arms and body to move as one unit rather than independently

āœ… Half to three-quarter swings only - this keeps the focus on connection rather than letting ego creep in and trying to smash it

āœ… Slow, deliberate repetitions - this is where the movement actually gets grooved, not on full-speed swings

No towel nearby? A golf glove or a tee peg under each armpit does exactly the same job.

This is the pace I’m working at coming back from surgery. Not just raking balls. I’m building the right habits, one swing at a time.

The ā€œScheffler Shuffleā€ vs Justin Thomas - high hands, explained šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

02/08/2026

3.5 months post hip double hip surgery, today was the day - first time back on a course with 2 of my academy members. Plan was to walk 9, hit a few soft wedges and 9 irons, see how the hips hold up. Then two holes from home I felt so good I couldn’t help myself. Here’s what I took from it:

1. My hips feel freer than they have in years - zero pain on the walk, even after a busy day of coaching on my feet

2. Short game’s still my strength

3. Iron play? Ball striking still there, but face control very

4. Felt good enough to hit 3 x 6 irons into the par 5 8th, so I unwrapped my 5 iron for the first time on the last hole. The rest of my long irons and woods are staying wrapped until I’m ready for them.

5. My brain hasn’t caught up with my body yet - couldn’t quite commit to a few shots

6. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for all 9 holes 😁

Had myself an ice bath when I got home, and will be interesting to see how I feel tomorrow.

So grateful to be back out there šŸ™ it’s been a long road

Comment LASER and I’ll send you my complete system to train your hands and make clubface control automaticšŸ”„

Most golfers are told to take their hands out of the swing. The best players in the world do the opposite.

Elite ball strikers are the best manipulators of the club face on the planet.

āœ… Use your hands intentionally - the face is governed by hands, wrists, and forearms, and ignoring that costs you ball flight control.

āœ… Own your ball flight - once the grip is solid, you can shape and control the shot rather than just hoping for the best.

In my complete Iron Play System I share all skill drills you’ll ever need to control your clubface and ball flight.

šŸ“© Send this to your playing partner who keeps being told to ā€œstop using their hands.ā€
