½ β a young woman who needed a way to defend herself against a much larger, stronger opponent. The system she helped shape is built entirely around using structure, timing and efficiency to overcome size and strength. Centuries later, that same principle is exactly why οΌ·ο½ο½ο½ οΌ£ο½ο½ο½ remains one of the most practical self-defence systems for people of any size, age or strength level.

Every class starts with a warm-up and stance work, moves into technique drills with a partner, and finishes with forms practice or Chi Sau (sticky hands) for more experienced students. No shouting, no ego, no pressure to spar before you're ready β just structured, supportive progression at your own pace. It's part fitness, part self-defence, part moving meditation. Come see for yourself.

Before any physical technique, self-defence starts with de-escalation: a firm voice, clear boundaries, and body language that says 'I am not an easy target.' Standing at an angle, keeping distance, and using a strong, calm 'back off' can end a confrontation before it starts. Wing Chun gives you the physical tools for when things go further β but avoiding the fight altogether is always the best outcome.

Tan Sau, or 'palm-up hand', is one of Wing Chun's core deflecting movements. Instead of meeting force with force, it uses angle and structure to redirect an incoming strike off your centreline β protecting you while keeping your hand live and ready to counter. It's a perfect example of Wing Chun's core idea: efficiency over effort. Small, simple movements that do more than they look like they should.

Wing Chun isn't about memorising a rigid system and forcing your body to fit it. It's the opposite: it's built around how the human body actually moves, so the concepts adapt to you β your size, your speed, your build. That's the whole point of a concept-based martial art. You're not trying to become a style. You're learning principles that make you more effective, exactly as you are.

We hear it all the time: 'I almost didn't walk through the door.' Starting something new is intimidating β but our students tell us the hardest part was showing up to that first class. After that, it's just progress: better structure, more confidence, real friendships and a community that shows up for each other on and off the mats. If you've been on the fence about starting, this is your sign.

One of the most common real-world grabs is a wrist grab β and it's also one of the easiest to escape once you understand leverage instead of strength. Wing Chun teaches you to move toward the attacker's thumb (the weakest point of their grip), rotate, and create space to strike or run. This is exactly the kind of practical, no-nonsense self-defence we focus on in our women's self-defence sessions. Strength doesn't decide who wins β structure and technique do.

Siu Nim Tau β 'The Little Idea' β is the very first form in Wing Chun, and it's where everything begins. It looks slow and simple, but it's teaching your body correct structure, relaxation, centreline awareness and the foundation for every technique that follows. Rush this form and you'll rush your whole Wing Chun journey. Master it, and the rest of the system opens up. It's one of the first things we teach in our Beginners Intro β because the basics really are the advanced stuff.
