Tooth colour and the optical properties of all-ceramics aren’t guesswork, it’s a science that can be broken down and quantified. Building a solid understanding of restorative materials lets us, as builders (technicians) and architects (clinicians), plan cases with predictability and consistency.

No doubt smile design is complex. Factoring in pre-operative colour, shade shift, and substrate management, all while respecting biological limitations, keeps us on our toes.

Once we grasp the concepts of tooth colour and restorative materials, the consult, planning, and fabrication become second nature and the results will speak for themselves.

Digital shade matching is one of the most technically demanding forms of fabrication requiring a comprehensive understanding of colour, material knowledge and substrate management.

However the predictability of its workflow far exceeds traditional methods of shade matching. Although time consuming in nature it significantly minimises the amount of insert appointments whilst building unparalleled patient confidence.

Not all zirconia is the same. Quite the contrary.

Even within the same generation, zirconia can vary significantly from brand to brand.

*Higher translucency, lower value — ideal when minimal shade shift is needed and natural aesthetics are the priority.

*Higher value, increased opacity — perfect for masking dark substrates and achieving predictable shade outcomes.

*High-strength gradient shaded zirconia (such as 4Y) — excellent for larger-span restorations or cases requiring thinner connector dimensions without compromising strength.

Every case presents unique challenges. Selecting the right zirconia for the indication helps maximise aesthetics, predictability, and long-term longevity.

The best results don’t come from using one zirconia —they come from understanding the strengths of each zirconia and selecting the most ideal properties for every unique case.
