Meet Simon Macauley – a firefighter from Fire and Rescue NSW, endurance runner and dodgeball gold medallist heading to Perth 2027 with some unfinished business 🏃‍♂️🥇🇦🇺

Simon joined FRNSW in 2021 and made his World Police and Fire Games debut in Birmingham, Alabama in 2025. A lifelong runner, he took on everything from the 5000m track and cross country to orienteering – then threw dodgeball into the mix for good measure.

And what started without even having a team ended with gold.

Simon registered for dodgeball not knowing who he would play alongside and was teamed up with police officers and firefighters from Canada and the USA. Three days later, the newly formed team had gone through the competition undefeated and taken the top step of the podium.

"It was like we'd known each other for years. We ended up going through undefeated to take the gold, but it was the friendships we formed that were the true highlight. I can't wait to see them again in Perth."

His first Games also delivered a bronze medal in the orienteering sprint and a memorable 5000m, where pulling on the Australian uniform helped him find another gear after a huge day of competition and run close to a personal best.

For Perth 2027, Simon is taking things up another notch – registering for Dodgeball, 5000m Track, Cross Country, Orienteering and the Half Marathon. He clocks up 10–15 hours of training each week, fitting runs around his shifts through Sydney Harbour and using the station gym while on duty.

Next March, he's looking forward to a huge Australian presence, catching up with the international mates he made in Alabama and, of course, defending that dodgeball gold medal 🥇

His advice to anyone considering Perth 2027?

The women are leading the charge at Perth 2027, with 13 women’s teams already registered for Rugby 7s, compared to 9 men’s teams!

But we’re not done yet. We need more than 2,500 volunteers to help power the Games and welcome thousands of first responders from around the world to Perth.
