Should you fish for trout in murky flood water following the rain?

Two days after receiving 30mm of rain I decided to head out to one of the local creeks to try for some trout with some soft plastics. I was fortunate enough to catch a healthy looking rainbow on my first cast. I don't often keep trout from our local waters but this fish had taken the hook quite deep and wouldn't have survived being released so was taken home for the smoker.

Whenever I do keep a trout I have a habit of checking its stomach content to see what it has been recently eating.

In terms of local trout I usually find 2 or 3 items in their stomachs . On checking this trout I was really surprised to find it had a stomach full of food, sticks and rocks. Overall this is what I found that I could identify:

- 53 Snails
- 7 Black Beetles
- 1 Ladybug
- 2 Water Beetles
- 1 Shrimp
- 18 Sticks ranging between 1-3 cms
- 2 Rocks

Overall the stomach content weighed in at 28 grams.

I've often stayed clear of some of the local water ways straight after a rain event in the belief that the fishing would be unsuccessful. Given what I found in this fish, future rainy days will definitely see me fishing the rivers.

So far 2018 has been a busy year for the Orange Trout Acclimatisation Society, with a great attendance at our monthly meetings, a number of successful fly tying nights and four fly casting mornings already hosted. With the 2018/2019 trout season just about to kick off we’ve still got lots in the works.

This Saturday morning (29th of September 2018) marks the opening of the new trout season. As we have for many years, we will be welcoming in the new season with our customary breakfast at the Lake. We’d like to welcome all members (both past and present) and their guests to join us for the opening breakfast starting from 7:30am at the BBQs on the Western side of Lake Canobolas. If you’re interested in attending please let me know so we can cater accordingly. A gold coin donation would be greatly appreciated to go towards catering costs.

One of our long standing members, Rodney Tonkin, has kindly donated a bunch of fly fishing gear, including fly rods and books that will be auctioned at the breakfast with funds going to the club. I will shortly send out a summary of some of the gear that will be available.

Annual Membership Fee ($30) will be due from the beginning of October, this can be paid at the opening breakfast, via direct deposit or at other club functions. A separate reminder email will be sent out on the 1st of October 2018.

The 16th of October 2018 will see us hosting our monthly from 7:00pm at the Gladstone Hotel.

On the 21st October 2018 we will be hosting another fly tying evening. This will be hosted at Legacy House and commence at 7:00pm. All members and guests are invited to attend.

Over the weekend of 16-18 November 2018, we will be hosting a club fishing/camping trip on the banks of the Macquarie River. This will be hosted on a private property that has 4km of Macquarie River frontage. All members and their guests are invited to attend however we ask that you register your interest via return email.

On the 20th of November 2018 will host our Annual General Meeting and monthly catch-up at the Gladstone Hotel from 7:00pm. We’d appreciate members joining us for the AGM.

Members Directory – At the last two meetings members have put forward a request to create a members directory to be shared within the club that will have the contact telephone number and email address of members. The idea behind this directory is to provide members with an avenue to contact other members should they wish to invite each other on fishing trips, have a chat about fishing or simply ask a question. We respect the privacy of all members so will only add your details to the directory with your express permission. Likewise, the directory will only be made available to those that have agreed to share their contact details. All the members that have attended the last two meetings have agreed to be added to the directory. Should you wish to be added to the directory, please let me know via return email.

Finally, a big thank you to all the members that have put a lot of effort in across the year to organise and facilitate our events and just for sharing their knowledge with other members.

--------- Fly Tying Night ----------

Due to popular demand we're hosting another fly tying night.

Members, guests and anyone interested in fly tying are all welcome.

The evening will be hosted at Legacy House (58 McNamara street, opposite Robertson Park) on the 26th August 2018 and start at 7.00pm.

Feel free to bring your own vice and materials however we will have some available for those that don't own any of this gear.
