The Rural Doctors Network joined me this morning for a little movement, mobility, balance, breathwork & brain training : Yoga & Applied Neurology.
Exploring how the nervous system influences the way we move, balance, breathe and respond to stress & how sensory input can change the way movement feels.
Because movement isn’t just about muscles.

Hypermobile people can be some of the most muscularly tense people you’ll meet.
😳Why?
1. Greater mobility often requires greater active support
Our Bendy friends have more compliant connective tissue, & nervous system often responds by increasing muscle activity to create greater active stability.
2. The brain prioritises safety over relaxation
Your nervous system is constantly asking:
“Do I feel supported?”
If the answer is, “Not quite,” it may increase muscle tone in an effort to protect the joints.
3. Stability requires energy
If your muscles are working all day to provide support, they rarely get the opportunity to fully switch off.
Over time this may feel like:
-Stiffness, aching, trigger points, knots, Fatigue
even though flexibility is excellent.
4. Living at the end of range
A common pattern is moving to the very end of every range because that’s where the joint feels like it “stops.”
Instead of muscles controlling movement throughout the range, the passive tissues absorb more of the load.
The nervous system may respond by increasing muscle tension afterwards to help protect the joint.
5. Better support often reduces tension
Many hypermobile people feel their best when they develop:
-Strength throughout their range of motion.
-Better ribcage & pelvic alignment.
-Balance & coordination.
-Breathing that improves core stability.
-Movement that builds confidence & control.
As the brain develops more confidence in controlling the joints, it often no longer needs to rely on as much protective muscle tension.
🚨Hypermobile people often aren’t working harder because they’re weak.
-They’re working harder because they’re trying to create support.
A Stretch may provide temporary relief.
But, If there is a lack of support or control, the nervous system may simply restore that muscle tension once the stretch is over.
This is why our sessions combine body awareness, biomechanics, mobility, strength, breath, & motor control.
✨ The goal is to help people feel more supported, so they can move with greater ease, confidence, & freedom.
