We treat boundaries like they need justification. Four apologies, a paragraph of context, a promise that we still care. Watch a tennis match instead. The ball is either in or out. Nobody explains the line, they just call it.
Your brain fights boundaries for real reasons. Uncertainty keeps your prefrontal cortex working overtime. Disagreement can register as a social threat. And every boundary you haven't set yet sits in your head as unfinished business, draining your focus before the day even starts.
A clearer line, not more explaining.
This is where episode 197 of The Burnout Recovery Podcast starts, a new ten part series on boundaries. Listen via the link in bio.

In tennis, a ball is either in or out. No apology, no negotiation, no four paragraph explanation. That's the line.
So why is it so hard to do the same thing with our own boundaries?
This week I'm opening a brand new ten part series on boundaries, why we avoid them, why our brain fights us on holding them, and how to hold the line at work, with our team, with our patients and at home.
We start with the neuroscience of why saying no feels so threatening, and one sentence that changed how I hold my own.

Healthcare has long rewarded a particular kind of leader - the one who takes on the most, asks for the least, and keeps going regardless of personal cost. That model gets celebrated, but it has a ceiling. Most people who've been in the system long enough have watched someone hit it.
Staying genuinely present, engaged, and functional over a long career requires deliberate choices. About what you take on. About what you protect. About when you ask for help and when you step back.
Those choices don't make you a less committed leader. They make you one who can still show up well years from now - and that matters for the people around you just as much as it does for you.
This week, one question : what's one deliberate choice you could make this week to lead more sustainably?
Have a great week π
Try counting how many times you say sorry today. I'd put money on it being more than you think.
"Sorry to bother you." "Sorry I'm late." Somewhere along the way we started apologising for existing, let alone for having a boundary.
Here's the swap I gave a room full of clinicians recently. Turn "sorry to bother you" into "thanks for waiting." Same moment, completely different energy, and no apology needed for taking up space.
You're allowed to state what you're able to do without softening it with sorry.
I talk boundaries, burnout, burnout recovery, prevention, and leadership every week on The Burnout Recovery Podcast. Link in bio to listen

It happens before you've even thought about it. Someone asks, and your mouth is already agreeing before your brain's caught up. That's not a personality flaw. That's years of training that treated saying no as a failure of commitment.
Boundary Scripts for Clinicians gives you twelve scripts for the moments this happens most, the overfull list, the after hours message, the favour you can't actually give. Word for word, so you've got the language ready before you need it, not after.
Swipe to see the video masterclass that comes with it, five short recordings where I walk through what a boundary actually is, the neuroscience behind why we don't set them, and how to deliver these scripts so they land instead of starting a fight.
No is a full sentence. You just need the words to back it up.

When you're under chronic stress, your brain defaults to whatever pathway already feels familiar and safe. So if the recovery strategy you've picked up asks you to behave in a way that's fundamentally uncomfortable for your temperament, you're not just building a new habit. You're trying to build it in exactly the conditions where your brain is most resistant to anything unfamiliar.
That's why a tool you've tried and abandoned more than once probably wasn't a willpower failure. It was a mismatch.
My latest podcast episode walks through how to find the version of recovery that fits your wiring, across mindset, support, movement and sleep, instead of forcing someone else's system.

Why does the exact same recovery strategy work brilliantly for one person and do nothing for the next?
This week in Episode 196 of The Burnout Recovery Podcast I get into the real reasons, the psychology, the occupational context, and the stress neuroscience behind why some tools stick and others don't.
Plus the four recovery pillars, mindset, support, movement, sleep, and how to find your own version of each instead of forcing someone else's.

The reasons people enter healthcare are deeply personal. Purpose, contribution, the pull toward helping people in vulnerable moments. That motivation is real and it matters.
But people change. Circumstances change. What felt like an uncomplicated calling at the start of a career can get more complicated over time - and that's not something to feel guilty about.
This week, revisit your why. Not to judge it or fix it - just to see where it's at now. A values check-in every now and then is a healthy thing, not a crisis.
Have a great week π
That inner critic feels like it's keeping you safe. In reality it's just keeping you exhausted.
I see this play out with healthcare professionals constantly. The self talk that sounds like accountability but is actually just punishment in disguise.
Swapping it for compassion isn't about letting yourself off the hook. It's about giving yourself the same grace you'd offer a colleague having a hard day.
