Another certificate is not upskilling. It’s procrastination with a receipt.

I know because I did it. Level 3. Level 4. Nutrition cert. Kettlebell cert. A shelf full of proof that I was “working on myself” while my business stayed exactly the same size.

Here’s what nobody says out loud: PTs collect certs because study feels like work without the risk of being judged. Nobody watches you fail a course. Everyone watches you fail at selling.

So we keep learning the thing we’re already good at, and avoid the three things actually capping our income:

→ Behaviour change. Your client doesn’t need a better program. They need someone who can have the hard conversation about their sleep, their drinking, their Sunday nights.

→ Sales. Not slimy. Just being able to say a number out loud without apologising for it.

→ Retention. Keeping someone 18 months instead of 6 is worth more than every qualification you’ve got combined.

Your clients have never once asked what level you’re accredited to. They ask if you can help. Those are different skills and only one of them is on your shelf.

The gap isn’t knowledge. It’s the stuff you’ve been avoiding learning because it’s uncomfortable.

👇 Which one are you avoiding: sales, retention, or the hard conversations? Be honest.

Day 100 of talking to a camera. âś…

Not because I’m good at it. Because on day 1 I was terrible at it and I decided being bad in public for 100 days was cheaper than staying comfortable for another year.

Here’s what most PTs won’t hear anywhere else: the gap between a good trainer and a great business isn’t your programming. It’s whether you can be seen before you’re polished.

You already know how to coach. You know how to build a session, fix a squat, get a client a result. What’s actually capping your income is that nobody knows you exist and you keep waiting until your content is “ready.”

It never gets ready. It gets easier.

100 days in, the reps nobody watched built more than the ones that went viral.

📌 Follow Nathan Brain | Coach for Personal Trainers if you’re a personal trainer ready to take your business from good to great - content, clients, and confidence.

👇 Comment the next uncomfortable thing you’re committing to. Say it out loud and it becomes a deadline instead of an idea.

3 words to never say again as a Personal Trainer:

❌ CONTRACT
âś… AGREEMENT

❌ TO BE HONEST
âś… JUST SAY WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID

❌ COST/PRICE
âś… INVESTMENT

Bad PTs ask people to train with them. Good ones prescribe.

There’s a massive difference and it changes everything about how the conversation goes.

Asking sounds like this. “Would you maybe be interested in doing some sessions? No pressure, have a think about it.”

Prescribing sounds like this. “Based on what you’ve told me, here’s what you need. Twice a week for twelve weeks, focused on strength and getting your knee bulletproof. That’s the plan.”

One is a favour. The other is a professional recommendation.

Your doctor doesn’t ask which medication you fancy. Your physio doesn’t check if the treatment plan feels a bit much. They assess, they diagnose, they tell you what needs to happen. And nobody calls that pushy, because they’re the expert and you came to them for exactly that.

You did a qualification. You assess movement. You understand load, recovery and progression. You are the expert in the room. Start acting like it.

The second you stop asking for permission and start giving a recommendation, the whole dynamic flips. You’re no longer someone hoping for a sale. You’re the professional telling them what the solution is.

Clients don’t want a mate who’s hopeful. They want someone who knows what they’re doing and says so.

Drop a 💊 if you’ve been asking when you should’ve been prescribing.

**Busy ≠ productive.**

Here’s what a struggling PT’s week actually looks like:

→ Redesigning the logo
→ Building a website for 3 clients
→ Another certification
→ 2 hours editing a Reel
→ Colour-coding the calendar
→ Wiping down benches during peak floor time
→ Coffee with another trainer to talk about how quiet it is

All of it feels like work. None of it is.

Because there’s only one question that matters at the end of the day:

Did that create a conversation with a potential client, or a better result for a current one?

Everything else is optional.

The trainers with a full book can afford to build brand assets and perfect their systems. The ones with gaps in the diary can’t - and they’re the exact ones doing it. Because it’s comfortable. Because it looks like progress. Because approaching a stranger on the gym floor is scary and re-racking dumbbells isn’t.

The tell? Ask a trainer how their week was. If they can describe every task in detail but can’t tell you how many new conversations they had, there’s your problem.

Do the uncomfortable thing first. The rest is decoration.
