The Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is one of the best exercises for building strength through your posterior chain, which is your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back. 💪

But remember, it’s not about how low you can go, it’s about how well you can control the movement.

✅ Keep a slight bend in your knees.
✅ Hinge at your hips by pushing them backwards.
✅ Keep your spine neutral and your chest proud.
✅ Keep the weight close to your legs throughout the movement.
✅ Only lower as far as you can while maintaining good technique.

The RDL isn’t just a gym exercise, it can be an excellent rehabilitation tool when prescribed appropriately. It helps improve hip hinge mechanics, develop hamstring and glute strength, and build confidence with lifting movements that transfer into everyday life.

Quality movement always comes before heavier weight. Master the technique first, then progressively overload as your strength improves.

Save this post for your next lower-body session and share it with someone working on their strength! 👊

Sit to Stands ⬆️⬇️

The sit to stand is one of the most valuable exercises in rehabilitation. While it mirrors an everyday movement we all perform, it’s also an effective way to rebuild strength, improve movement quality, and restore confidence following injury, surgery, or periods of reduced activity.

Whether you’re recovering from back pain, hip or knee surgery, an ankle injury, or simply working to regain strength after time away from exercise, sit to stands can be an excellent place to start.

Benefits include:
✅ Improves lower limb strength
✅ Enhances balance and stability
✅ Increases muscular endurance
✅ Retrains movement patterns for everyday activities
✅ Builds confidence with standing, walking and transferring
✅ Supports a safe return to work, sport and daily life

Like all rehabilitation exercises, sit to stands should be performed with good technique and progressed based on your individual capacity. Small improvements completed consistently can lead to meaningful gains in strength, function and overall quality of life.

Glute Bridge Demonstration 🏋️

The glute bridge is a simple yet highly effective exercise commonly used in the early stages of rehabilitation to improve hip strength, pelvic control, and overall movement quality.

When pain is present, it’s common to become less active, leading to weakness in the muscles that support the hips, pelvis, and lower back. Reintroducing movement in a controlled way can help restore strength and confidence.

Key technique tips:
✅ Keep your feet hip-width apart.
✅ Brace your core before lifting.
✅ Drive through your heels to lift your hips.
✅ Squeeze your glutes at the top without over-arching your lower back.
✅ Lower slowly with control.

Remember, rehabilitation isn’t about pushing through pain. Exercises should be performed within a comfortable and manageable range, with symptoms monitored throughout and after the session.

If you’re unsure whether glute bridges are appropriate for your condition, speak with your healthcare professional or Accredited Exercise Physiologist for individualised advice.

Struggling to master the dead bug? 🏋️‍♂️

Using a fitness ball is one of the easiest ways to learn the correct technique. By gently pressing your hands and knees into the ball, you create tension through your core, making it easier to maintain a neutral spine and improve trunk stability throughout the movement.

One of the biggest benefits is that it’s a great reminder you’re performing the movement correctly by extending your opposite arm and opposite leg while maintaining pressure on the ball.

✅ Promotes core activation
✅ Improves coordination and control
✅ Reinforces correct movement patterns
✅ Great for beginners and rehabilitation

Focus on slow, controlled movements and keep constant pressure on the ball throughout each repetition. Quality always beats speed.

Save this exercise for your next core session! 💪

Banded shoulder external rotation is a simple but highly effective exercise used to strengthen the rotator cuff and improve shoulder stability.

This exercise is commonly prescribed during rehabilitation following shoulder injuries and surgery, helping to restore strength, improve movement control, and support a safe return to daily activities, work, and sport.

✅ Strengthens the rotator cuff
✅ Improves shoulder stability
✅ Enhances movement control
✅ Supports injury recovery and prevention

When performing this exercise, focus on maintaining good posture and keeping your elbows tucked by your sides. Move slowly and with control, particularly during the return (eccentric) phase, to maximise muscle activation and reduce the risk of symptom flare-up.

As always, complete the exercise within a comfortable range and stop if significant pain occurs.

Alternating Banded Marching - Rehabilitation

Banded marching is a simple yet effective exercise that can help improve hip flexor strength, mobility, and muscular endurance.

When you’re living with persistent lower back pain, it’s very common to move less. Over time, this can lead to weakness of the muscles not only around the painful area but throughout the body, impacting your daily movement.

At MXP, our goal isn’t to push through pain. We aim to:
✔️ Manage symptoms within a recommended threshold
✔️ Minimise flare-ups
✔️ Gradually rebuild strength and confidence in movement

Why use banded marching?
• Strengthens the hip flexors
• Improves walking mechanics (gait)
• Reduces compensatory movement patterns
• Supports the lower back during everyday activities
• Helps restore initial strength lost through reduced activity

Banded marching isn’t prescribed for every case of lower back pain. We use it when an assessment identifies hip flexor weakness or gait impairments following long-term pain. As always, perform the exercise with slow, controlled movements, and maintain good posture to maximise rehabilitation benefits.
