🔴⚫⚪ BMB BASKETBALL — MORE THAN A GAME 🏀

How to help your child build confidence.

Praise effort first.
“Great hustle.”
“I loved how you kept trying.”
“Good job getting back on defence.”

Let them make mistakes. Mistakes are part of development. BMB’s player expectations specifically encourage players to be coachable, try things and not be afraid of making mistakes.

Give them achievable challenges. Start close to the basket. Use simple dribbling. Make the target achievable, then slowly increase the difficulty. Success → challenge → success.

Give them ownership. During games, let them make decisions.

Avoid calling “shoot,” “pass,” or “dribble” from the sideline. BMB’s parent guidelines emphasise that players need the opportunity to develop their own decision-making.

Make the car ride home safe. After a tough game, don’t analyse every mistake. BMB’s guidance is simple: support, encourage and listen if your child wants to talk.

A great question after training or a game is:

“What’s one thing you did today that you’re proud of?”

Then leave basketball there.

Confidence doesn’t mean “I never make mistakes.”

It means:

“I made a mistake. I’m still going.”

That’s the player we want to build. 🐂🏀
