Today the following students participated at the 2026 Victorian State Championships:
A***n, Arjun, Ava, Jacob, Lilly, Mia, Tess and Theo.
For some it was their first tournament, others are seasoned veterans. Everyone did exceptionally well. Some of our green belts competed against black belts and held their own.
We were proud of all their efforts and determination.
As previously advised, the National All Styles - Victoria tournaments allow all martial arts styles to participate and today saw devotees from Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Karate, Kung Fu, Kick Boxing and possibly others that I did not recognise. This allows students to compete and be compared with a broader cross section of martial artists and makes for some interesting and entertaining interactions.
The following were notable results:
Arjun: Bronze in Forms (Kata) combined Boys and Girls 10-11 years 5th kyu to black belt
Mia: Gold in Forms (Kata) Girls 14-15 years 5th kyu to black belt. 2026 State Champion
Mia: Gold in Points Sparring (Kumite) Girls 14-15 years 5th kyu to black belt. 2026 State Champion
Tess: Gold in Forms (Kata) Girls 12-13 5th kyu to black belt. 2026 State Champion
Theo: Bronze in Points Sparring (Kumite) Boys 12-13 years 5th kyu to black belt
A big shout out and thank you to all who participated, parents and instructors who helped with the registrations and attended on the day to coach and support the participants.

Buddy Training Week: Support. Encourage. Include.
As part of Karate Australia’s Karate Against Bullying initiative and Bullying No Way Week, we’re putting the spotlight on something that can make a real difference: being a good buddy.
A buddy is someone who looks out for others, encourages them when things are difficult, includes them when they might otherwise be left out, and celebrates their progress.
That’s what we want to see in our dojo and in our wider community.
This week, we’re encouraging our students to train together, support each other and make sure everyone feels welcome.
Because sometimes it only takes one person to make someone else feel included.
Be that buddy. Support. Encourage. Include.
Our dojo stands together against bullying.

Small Acts. Big Impact.
From 17–21 August, our Karate School in Oakleigh is proud to support Karate Australia”s Karate Against Bullying initiative as part of Bullying No Way Week.
Karate is about much more than learning how to kick and punch. We teach our students respect, courage, self-control, confidence and inclusion because these values matter both inside and outside the dojo.
A kind word. Including someone who feels left out. Having the courage to speak up. Showing respect even when it’s difficult.
Small acts can make a big impact.
Together, we can help create a community where everyone feels safe, respected and included.

Karate Against Bullying: Building Confidence, Respect and Courage
From 17–21 August 2026, Karate Australia and Karate Victoria is supporting through its , and The Karate School (Genseiryu) in Oakleigh is proud to be taking part.
Bullying can have a lasting impact on children’s confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging. Karate provides more than physical skills. Through regular training, students learn important life values including respect, self-control, courage, discipline and inclusion.
During Bullying No Way Week, we will be reinforcing these values with our students and highlighting how karate can help children develop the confidence to stand up for themselves, support others and contribute positively to their community.
At the Karate School in Oakleigh, we believe true martial arts strength is not about aggression. It is about having the confidence to make good choices, manage emotions, treat others with respect and show courage when it matters.
As part of this initiative, karate clubs across Australia such as The Karate School here in Oaklegh are supporting this initiative through activities such as:
Open classes and demonstrations
Buddy training sessions
Anti-bullying pledges and discussions
Short talks about respect, inclusion and self-control.
We invite families, students and our local community to join us in supporting a simple but powerful message:
Kindness is strength.
Respect is courage.
Together, we can help create a community where everyone feels safe, included and valued.
