The Kooyong Classic gives tennis fans the chance to see some of the world’s best players up close in one of the sport’s most intimate and historic settings, just days before the Australian Open.

Australian fan favourite Nick Kyrgios and former World No. 2 Paula Badosa are the first players confirmed for 2027, with more world-class players to be announced in the months ahead.

Meet John, one of Mitcham Tennis Club's longest-standing members.

John Cornell has been playing tennis since he was 14 years old, beginning on the Burwood Road Methodist Church courts, where he would later get married.

He remembers playing with white tennis balls on asphalt courts. By the end of a match, those white balls would be black!

After many years as a member of Mitcham Uniting Church Tennis Club, John joined Mitcham Tennis Club when the church grounds were sold. John continues to attend our club as a valued non-playing member, where he keeps in touch with friends.

John’s story reflects what Mitcham Tennis Club is all about: community, connection, and a place where people of all ages can belong, both on and off the court.
