Good at ten doesn't look like heavy, and it isn't a trophy. It's owning the movement: landing softly, changing direction, keeping shape when tired, still wanting the next session. This age is wide open to learning how to move, and that window doesn't stay open forever. We don't chase a result they'll regret at fourteen. We build the athlete underneath it.

Nothing to sign up for here, and no date on anything.

If your athlete's season has just finished, or is about to, and you can tell they want more than the setup around them is able to give them, that is worth a conversation at some point. Not tonight. At some point.

The first step is a trial session. They come in, they train, and you both get a look at how it is built and whether they walk out wanting the next one. No lock in and no sell. If it is not their room you will know inside the hour, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

Details in the bio whenever you want them. No rush on it.

Plenty of parents spend about now just working out what the next few months are meant to look like. That is worth doing whether or not anyone ever sets foot in here.

If your athlete is fourteen or over and has a sport, a position, and a date their
club goes back, we can build to it.

One athlete, one program, written to what that position actually asks and to the
week their season restarts. Read and signed off by our head coach before they see
it. Trained on our floor at times they set.

If they do not have a date yet, that is a different conversation and a good one,
and it is what Foundations and Advanced are for.

We will not promise you a spot in the side. Nobody honest can.

Either way it starts the same way. Send us a message with the sport, the position and
the date, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

Ask them when pre-season starts. They will not have to check.

Something that slows us down on purpose.

No athlete here gets their program until our head coach has read the whole thing
and signed it off. Not the intake form, not the paperwork. The actual program.

It means builds go in the order they are taken, and it means we are slower than a
template would be.

We have never found a good argument for changing it. A program with a young
athlete's name on it that nobody senior read is not a program, it is a document.

They train it for months. Somebody should have read it.

Ask your athlete when pre-season starts.

If they are serious, they will know the week. They will not have to check. It has
been sitting somewhere in the back of their head since the last game of the season.

That is worth noticing, because it tells you something you cannot get from a
conversation about effort. They are already carrying the date.

What they usually do not have is anyone carrying the weeks in front of it.

That is not a gap in them. It is a gap in the calendar. The club has finished, the
school year is winding down, and the part of the year that decides the most about
next season is the part with nobody looking after it.

Someone has to own those weeks.

Athlete-first, human always.

A good off-season at sixteen does not look the way it looks on the internet.

It looks like two or three quality sessions a week, held for ten or twelve weeks instead of ten or twelve days. Loads that climb slowly enough that you could repeat the session tomorrow. Time spent on the thing you quietly avoided all season instead of the thing you are already good at. A week or two genuinely off at the start, then back into it properly.

That is the whole standard. It is unremarkable to look at and it is the only version that is still there when round one comes around.

Quality first. Load second. The athlete before the number.

If you are wondering what to actually ask for over the holidays, that list is it. Not more. Just held for longer than a fortnight.

We have watched both versions of this play out for years now.

The athlete who spends the off-season doing a bit of everything and nothing in
particular. They arrive at pre-season willing, and they spend the first month
getting through sessions rather than getting anything from them.

And the athlete who arrived already built. Same clubs, same pre-seasons, same coaches.
We have seen it both ways more times than we can count. They spend that month showing
what they can do.

The second one is not more talented. That is the part worth sitting with.

They just did not spend the off-season waiting for someone to tell them what to do.

Here is what usually happens the week a young athlete's season ends.

Nothing.

The club has moved on to the side still playing, which is fair enough, that side has a game on Saturday. The school program stops with the term or is about to. A summer sport starts in a few weeks and will happily take three nights and give nothing back underneath. And the honest advice from most quarters is have a break, you have earned it, which is completely true and is also not a plan.

So a fortnight goes by. Then another one. And the thing they were quietly annoyed about in round nine is still there in round one next year, because nobody ever actually set out to fix it. Not through neglect. Because it was nobody's job.

We are not saying anyone did the wrong thing here. Everyone on that list is stretched across more athletes than they can hold. If you are the parent in the middle of it, you are probably the only person with the full picture of what their year actually looked like, which is an odd position to be in and not one anyone asked for.

But somebody has to be the one who asks the athlete what the season was really like for them, and then changes something based on the answer.

That is the whole job. Heard first. Trained second.

A question worth asking about any off-season week.

Not how hard was it. Whether it built something.

Three things a good off-season week has in it, at any age from fourteen up.

One. Something that got heavier or cleaner than last week. Not both at once, and
not every week, but the direction has to be somewhere.

Two. Something fast. Real speed, taken fresh, not tacked onto the end of a session
when they are already tired. Speed trained tired is just conditioning wearing a
disguise.

Three. Something that teaches them to land and change direction. This is the least
exciting item on the list and the one still paying them in July.

If a week has all three, it was a good week, even if it did not feel like much.

Most off-season weeks we see have the first one and nothing else.
