Do your good strikes feel like luck—and your next shot could be fat or thin?

A big reason many everyday golfers struggle with contact is that they have never clearly learned what should be happening at impact.

The body and club should not simply return to their address positions. Pressure has shifted towards the lead side, the hips are opening, and the hands and club are moving into a position that helps the club reach the ground in the correct place.

However, impact is not a pose you hold. It is a position you move through.

This video shows a simple way to first rehearse the important pieces, then introduce a small swing and gradually make the movement more natural. It gives you a much clearer feel for what you are trying to create when you hit the ball.

Better impact can mean fewer heavy and thin shots, more predictable ball striking and greater confidence when you step over the ball.

Does your arm make a strange chicken-wing movement after impact—and you have no idea why?

You can probably see the problem clearly on video.

The lead elbow sticks out, the arm folds awkwardly and the follow-through just doesn’t look right.

But knowing what it looks like isn’t the same as knowing what causes it.

Many golfers try to fix the chicken wing by forcing the lead arm straight. The trouble is, the arm position is usually a symptom of something else happening in the swing.

It is often created by incorrect shoulder and upper-arm rotation. When those parts aren’t moving correctly, the elbow may fold or move away from the body to compensate.

In this video, I break down what may be creating that awkward movement so you can understand what actually needs to change.

Until you understand the cause, it’s very difficult to fix the appearance—or the effect it may be having on your ball striking and consistency.

Do you release the club too early and struggle with heavy, thin or weak golf shots?

You may be casting the club from the start of your downswing.

Casting happens when the loaded angles in the wrists are released too soon, rather than the body helping to lead and time the release.

This can cause the club to bottom out before it reaches the ball, costing you speed and making solid contact much harder. It can also make the clubface difficult to manage, leading to inconsistent direction.

The Sling Swing drill helps you feel a better downswing sequence:

The body leads, the arms follow and the wrists release the club later.

It is an exaggerated movement drill, not a position you need to force into your normal swing. The goal is to help you feel how a better sequence can improve your speed, strike and clubface control.

If your chips are heavy, thin, or hard to control, your hands might be taking over.

This is something I see a lot with everyday golfers.

They try to help the ball up, control the club with their wrists, or make a very handsy little motion around the green. The problem is, when the arms and wrists do too much, it becomes much harder to control where the club lands.

A better chipping action needs some help from the body.

This drill is a simple way to feel how your body pivot can help move the club, while your hands stay more in front of your chest. That gives you a better chance of clean contact, better distance control, and more predictable chips around the green.

Small change, big difference for your short game.

Your grip might be making golf harder than it needs to be.

The grip is probably the most important fundamental in golf, because it has such a big influence on how you control the club.

It can affect direction, contact, speed and consistency — to name just a few.

But for many golfers, the way they hold the club is actually making the game harder.

Before you start changing your swing, it’s worth checking whether your grip is giving you the best chance to control the clubface, strike the ball well, and create speed without losing control.

A good grip doesn’t need to look perfect or textbook.

But it does need to help you control the club.

Get your grip right, and you give yourself a much better chance of hitting better golf shots more often.

Miss-hitting shots is one of the most common frustrations in golf.

You hit one solid, then the next one comes off the toe, heel, thin or heavy — and it feels like your swing is changing every time.

One reason this can happen is an unstable swing circle.

The swing circle is a simple technique idea. Your spine acts as the centre of the circle, your body rotates around it, and your lead arm helps control the width of that circle.

If your spine moves too much, or your lead arm collapses, the circle changes.

And if the circle changes, it becomes harder to return the club to the ball consistently.

So if contact is your problem, it’s worth checking whether your swing circle is stable enough — not just whether your swing “looks good.”

Ever wondered why your wedges don’t spin back like the ones you see on TV?

A lot of everyday golfers think backspin is all about technique, but there’s more to it than that.

Before the ball can grab and spin, you need a few things working in your favour: a soft-cover golf ball, a clean and dry clubface, a clean lie, enough loft, and enough speed.

If there’s grass, moisture or dirt between the clubface and the ball, the club simply can’t grip the ball properly. And if you’re trying it from the wrong lie or with too little loft, it’s not realistic to expect the ball to rip backwards.

This video explains the conditions that make backspin possible, so you know when to go for it — and when not to expect it.

Do you struggle with heavy shots or inconsistent contact?

One common cause is swaying in the backswing.

Many golfers move sideways away from the ball without realising it. Once that happens, they have to make a big recovery move just to get back to the ball — and that makes solid contact much harder to repeat.

This drill is a simple way to feel better body motion and pressure shift without sliding out of position.

It can help you understand why your low point might be getting behind the ball, and why your contact feels so inconsistent from shot to shot.

If your swing feels like it moves too much side-to-side, give this a try.

If your body motion is poor, it’s very hard to make solid, powerful and consistent golf swings.

A lot of golfers blame their hands, arms or club position when they struggle with bad contact, slow swing speed and inconsistency.

But often, the real problem is that the body isn’t moving correctly.

Once you add the ball and club, the swing can feel complicated very quickly. That’s why the T-S-T Drill is so useful.

It strips everything away until all that’s left is the body, then helps you practise the 3 main body movements in the golf swing:

Turn. Shift. Turn.

When players learn to move their body better, they give themselves a much better chance of improving contact, creating speed and building a more consistent swing.

If your swing feels disconnected, weak or unreliable, this is a great place to start.

Pitch shots often feel difficult because golfers don’t practise them properly.

Most players will spend time hitting full shots, but those awkward half-wedge distances don’t always get the attention they deserve.

And even when golfers do practise pitching, they often just hit balls without really knowing what they’re trying to improve.

Good pitching comes down to 3 key skills:

Solid contact, swing speed control, and loft delivery.

When you train those properly, you start to get better control over contact, distance and trajectory.

So if your pitch shots feel like guesswork, the answer probably isn’t just “practise more” — it’s practise the right things.
