We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Okamoto Shihan for joining us at Newcastle Aikido this week.
Her generous approach to teaching, attention to detail, and willingness to share her understanding of Aikido are gifts our members deeply appreciate.
We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, train, and spend time on the mat together 🙏🏻

MUSUBI | 結び
Often translated as connection.
But Musubi is more than simply being connected to another person.
It is the ability to unite. To bring things together. To create harmony where there was separation.
In Aikido, Musubi is the moment we connect with a partner’s movement, intention and energy.
Not by resisting.
Not by overpowering.
But by understanding.
Without Musubi, technique is mechanical.
With Musubi, movement becomes effortless.
On the mat, Musubi teaches us to establish a genuine connection before we move.
A connection so clear that two people can move as one.
Not because they are the same, but because they have joined completely in that moment.

MISOGI | 禊
Often translated as “purification” or “cleansing”, but Misogi is more than either.
It is the practice of removing what is unnecessary so that what is essential can emerge.
Traditionally associated with purification through water, Misogi is also understood as the process of clearing away what obscures the mind and spirit.
In our dojo, Misogi is both a practice and a principle.
Through Harae (祓), breathwork and sincere training, we engage in the ongoing process of purification.
Through effort, attention and presence, we gradually let go of distraction, ego and doubt.
Showing up when we don’t feel like it.
Letting go of yesterday’s mistakes.
Returning our attention to the present moment.
Miyamoto Musashi wrote:
“Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world.”
Misogi creates the conditions for that mindset.
A clear mind.
A sincere heart.
A return to what is essential. 🐺
