One of the first things strength training changes isn’t muscle size.

New research suggests the ageing nervous system may remain far more adaptable than we thought.

A 2026 study by Casolo and colleagues followed adults averaging 71 years of age through a 4-week strength training program.

After just four weeks, strength improved by 17.6%.

What’s particularly interesting is these improvements were driven largely by changes in the nervous system, not major changes in muscle size.

The researchers found the nervous system became better at activating existing muscle and producing force.

In other words, the body was learning to use existing muscle more effectively.

This helps explain why many people start feeling stronger, steadier, and more capable relatively quickly after beginning strength training, even before visible physical changes occur.

That’s an important message, given many people assume decline is simply part of ageing - or that if they’ve “lost too much” strength or fitness, there’s little point starting again.

But studies like this suggest the capacity to adapt remains remarkably preserved later in life.

At Kieser, this is why strength training is approached as more than just building muscle.

It’s about improving the strength, confidence, and function that support long-term independence and healthy ageing.
