A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to make a supportive submission for DA2026/0489, the proposed rebuild of the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club clubhouse.

Your support means a great deal to the club.

Since the fire in November 2021, NLSC has continued to operate thanks to the resilience, commitment and generosity of its members, volunteers, families and friends. The proposed rebuild is an essential step towards restoring the facilities our sailors, juniors, families and wider lake community deserve.

Every supportive submission helps show Council how much this club matters — not only as a sailing club, but as a place where children learn, families connect, volunteers contribute, and the community comes together on Narrabeen Lake.

It closes on 8th June, so make sure you get on before the deadline. We would really appreciate your support and, importantly, it will mean proper change and shower facilities for all members, and a base from which to continue to grow our wonderful community of sailors and supporters.

Dear members and friends of Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club,

As many of you will be aware, we have been without a clubhouse for the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club since a catastrophic fire in November 2021. Since the fire, the club’s committee has been negotiating with council and the engaged architects to arrive at a Development Application, which has just been made public. The DA link can be found below and will be active for comments and feedback from 8th May until 5th June 2026.

The committee has reviewed the DA and are in favour of the design. Now we need your urgent help and support to help push this DA through, counter any objections and advance the project.

If nothing else, please post something along the following lines “As a member of NLSC I support the DA and encourage Council to progress the project as fast as possible to give this amazing club the club house it deserves.”

As current members and friends of the club, we encourage you to consider making a submission in favour of the proposed project. In making a submission, here are some points which may help inform your submission.
- The proposal is for the replacement of the previous NLSC clubhouse which was destroyed by fire in November 2021.
-The previous building had been on the site since 1970 and had been in continual use by NLSC since then.
- The new proposed building will sit on the same site as the previous with a similar footprint.
- NLSC has been a presence on the Lake since 1905, making it the oldest sailing club in the area.
- NLSC has an established and very successful junior teaching and training process and desperately requires greater boat storage facility, showers and change rooms, which are included in the proposal.

In making your submission in support of the build, we hope the following might furnish you with some ideas to include.
- How long you have been associated with the club and the impact it has made on you personally, or on those you know.
- The legacy the club has had on you, your family and acquaintances.
- Sailing at Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club has multiple benefits, whether through formative, social or competitive sailing. Some of the benefits are noted here:
- Sailing builds fitness and coordination. We have an increasing cohort of junior sailors, keen to learn to sail and then further their skills. In this day of ever-increasing battles to keep kids off their screens, the club provides the ideal antidote.
- A volunteer-run club such as ours develops teamwork and opportunities for leadership. Sailing as a sport improves decision-making and resilience, and develops discipline, focus, and confidence.
- Coming together in such an environment creates friendships and unparallelled community connection. It encourages communication and cooperation, and supports wellbeing and enjoyment, particularly vitally, all through a connection with nature.
- The nature of club sport such as sailing at Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club builds a sense of belonging and shared experience, such that we would hope that the Council sees as a most valuable asset in our community.

Team Narrabeen had a ball at the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club - Off the beach sailing sprint series. It was a family affair as usual, the sailing being almost an anecdote in this weekend filled with laughter, friendship and joy. The locals got in top of us in the sailing, congratulations to them! (The burger on the way back wasn’t nearly as good as the home made pizza on Saturday night). Thanks Coffs, see you next year!

Sailing is basically 3 dimensional chess… whilst doing hard physical activity… whilst people are chucking freezing cold water at you.
That’s the bit people don’t really see from the outside. They just see a bunch of boats ‘pottering’ around a lake or the sea.
In reality, you’ve got wind shifts and bends you can’t properly see coming, gusts that change everything in a second, other boats trying to control where you go, and your own boat quietly slowing down the moment you get something slightly wrong.
And it’s all happening at once.
Sometimes it clicks and you feel like you’ve got loads of time, everything feels quite easy, like you’re properly in control of it.
Most of the time… it doesn’t feel like that at all.
You’re slightly behind, slightly out of position, slightly reacting instead of actually deciding.
And that’s the game really.
You can’t control the wind or what the other boats do, but you can control how well your own boat works.
When your boat handling is right, when tacks, gybes and transitions just happen without you really thinking about them, everything else starts to feel a bit easier.
You’ve got a bit more time, a bit more space, a few more options.
The sailors who do well aren’t always the most talented or the fittest, they’re just the ones who get that side of it right again and again, even when it’s messy.
Keep it simple, get the boat handling right, and better decisions tend to follow.
I can’t help with the cold water!
