I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what we really mean when we say Jiu-Jitsu “empowers” kids. I don’t think empowerment means creating situations where a child always gets to win, always feels strong, or always gets the experience they want. Jiu-Jitsu teaches something much more useful. A child can try incredibly hard and still lose. They can be pinned by someone more skilled. They can become frustrated. They can tap. And when they tap, the other person lets go. Then five minutes later, the roles might be reversed. Now they’re the one with the dominant position. Someone taps beneath them, and it’s their responsibility to let go immediately. Over and over, they experience both sides of power. Someone can be stronger than me and still respect my boundary. I can be stronger than someone else and I have a responsibility to respect theirs. That’s why I think good Jiu-Jitsu teaches something deeper than confidence. It teaches kids that they can be powerful without always being in power. And that’s a lesson that reaches a long way beyond the mats.

Last night was our kids mid-year grading at Point Break.

Gradings are about more than belts and stripes. They’re a chance to stop for a moment and recognise the work that often happens quietly week after week. The days they were nervous but stepped onto the mats anyway. The techniques that were once difficult but slowly became familiar. Learning to lose, learning to listen, learning to help a teammate and learning that progress doesn’t always happen quickly.

For kids, there is something powerful about having that effort seen. Not just being rewarded for being the best, but being recognised for persistence, courage, growth and simply continuing to show up.

We’re incredibly proud of this little crew. And judging by these photos, they were pretty proud of themselves too 😂

Congratulations, Warriors. Well earned. ❤️

Gradings are about so much more than a new stripe or belt.

For children, there is something deeply important in having their effort recognised. To have someone notice the quiet things. The courage to keep trying when something is difficult. The patience to learn. The way they help a training partner. The confidence that slowly grows each time they step onto the mats.

Not all growth is loud or easily measured. Sometimes it happens little by little, almost unnoticed, until one day we stop and show a child just how far they have come.

That’s what we love about grading days. It’s a moment for each child to feel seen. Not compared to the child beside them, but recognised for their own journey, their own effort and who they are becoming.

Wednesday 19th August is our Kids Mid Year Grading at Point Break.

We’re looking forward to celebrating the wins.

No Open Mat at Point Break this weekend (Saturday 15th August). We’re taking the crew down to New Meta in Ballina to jump in on their Open Mat instead. 5:45pm

Open mats are one of the most underrated ways to improve your Jiu-Jitsu. A lot of people wonder if they’re “good enough” to go to one, but that’s kind of missing the point. Open mat is where a lot of the learning happens.

Even within your own gym, it’s a chance for the 6am crew to roll with people they might never see at night. Different bodies, different styles, different problems to solve.

And visiting another gym takes that even further. You meet people who are into the same weird thing you are, get rounds with styles you’re not used to, and usually come home with something new to think about.

If you compete, you need those different looks. If you don’t compete, it’s still valuable to feel how people outside your usual training room move, react and approach Jiu-Jitsu. Sometimes it reinforces what you’re doing. Sometimes it exposes a hole. Sometimes you see something that inspires you to add another layer to your own game.

It’s good to have your crew and your home mats. But it’s also good to look outside your own box every now and then.

Share the mats. Meet new people. Get different rounds. Keep learning.

See you at NEW META JIU JITSU | Ballina
