Does the horse believe their behaviour can change what happens next?

Last week we asked what might be happening before behaviour becomes visible. Dr Stephen Peters takes that idea one step further.

In discussing internal locus of control, he describes the importance of an animal learning that its behaviour matters, that what it does can influence what happens next.

In the classic learned helplessness experiments, animals exposed to an aversive stimulus, that they could escape, learned that their behaviour could stop it. When the stimulus became inescapable, the lesson changed. No matter what they did, nothing changed. And eventually, some stopped trying.

For riders, that creates a powerful question:

When we apply pressure, does the horse clearly understand which response will change or release that pressure?

Because before we ever see resistance, hesitation, shutting down or a loss of response, the nervous system may already be learning something far more fundamental:

Does what I do matter?

Dr Peters describes behaviour as communication. Information about where the horse is in their nervous system and what they may be capable of in that moment. And importantly, what we eventually see on the outside may be a long way down the line from what has already been happening within.

Perhaps that makes the release more than a reward for the “right” response. Perhaps it is part of teaching the horse that they have some influence over their world. That they can search for an answer.

That their response matters.

TEAM SA | ONE TEAM, ONE SPIRIT!

As our Team SA families begin their journey to Werribee for the Australian Interschool Championship 2026, I want to wish you all safe travels, wonderful riding and, above all, a competition filled with great sportsmanship and team spirit!

Of course, you all have your own goals and dreams for this competition, and I hope you achieve every one of them. But Nationals is about so much more than individual results. It's about TEAM.

Support one another, celebrate each other's successes, pick each other up when things don't go to plan, and remember that how you conduct yourselves is just as important as the results you achieve.

To our naming rights sponsor, Equine Stable Designs, thank you for your generous support and for being part of our Interschool journey this year.

A heartfelt thank you also to Equestrian Victoria Interschool, our hosting state, and everyone working behind the scenes to bring these Championships together. We know just how much goes into an event of this size, and we are so grateful for the opportunity you have created for our young riders.

To ALL the teams travelling from across Australia, we wish you safe journeys, wonderful riding and every success. May this week be filled with new friendships, great memories and the shared love of our horses that brings us all together.

And finally, to our incredible Interschool SA Committee Jaimie Stichel, Caroline Rhodes, Craig Cindy Wissell, Naomi Downer and Collette Wheadon. The work that goes into getting a team of this size to Melbourne is enormous. The hours, the organisation, the problem-solving and the sheer determination to make it all happen have been extraordinary.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. As I prepare to finish my time as Chair, I couldn't be prouder of the team we are sending to Nationals or the people who have helped get us here.

Ride well, look after one another, make wonderful memories and show everyone what Team SA is all about!

WE ARE TEAM SA!
