Proposed TK2 Challenge Rules – for agreement
1. Team composition
A TK2 Challenge relay team may consist of 4 or 6
Edit. Can be 8 per team
registered paddlers.
For the main TK2 Challenge Trophy, the team must be a mixed team.
For a 4-person team, this means 2 male and 2 female paddlers.
We need to clarify the required gender composition of a 6-person team — presumably 3 male and 3 female if we want the same principle to apply.
At all times on the water, the TK2 must contain either:
1 male + 1 female, or
2 female paddlers.
Two male paddlers cannot paddle together at any time.
2. One boat per team
Edit: You can have multiple craft, however change over rules apply. The arriving paddlers must exit their kayak prior to the departing kayakers can enter their kayak.
Each relay team may use ONE TK2 only for the entire event.
Boats cannot be swapped between stages, legs or checkpoints, except where Race Management approves a replacement because the original boat has become genuinely unserviceable.
3. Mandatory paddler changes
The TK2 must come into the bank at every designated checkpoint.
The team must change at least one paddler at every checkpoint.
Therefore, the same pair cannot simply paddle through a checkpoint together.
4. TK2 specifications
The boat must be a traditional TK2 meeting the following specifications:
Maximum length: 5487 mm
Minimum waterline beam: 533 mm
Rudder: trailing rudder positioned behind the hull
Maximum distance between cockpits: 1700 mm, measured back-to-back
Buoyancy: permanent fixed buoyancy must be fitted
Race SAFETY TEAM will physically check the boat's flotation/buoyancy. Other TK2 specifications will operate primarily on a trust/honour basis, although Race Management reserves the right to inspect a boat if its eligibility is questioned.
And yes — no submarines!
5. TK2 Challenge Trophy
The principal TK2 Challenge Trophy is for teams complying with the Mixed TK2 Challenge rules above.
This is the category we are specifically trying to build and recognise through the Challenge.
6. Bill Dunn Trophy – Handicap Relay
Teams that do not meet the Mixed TK2 Challenge team-composition requirements may still compete in the relay competition for the Bill Dunn Trophy – Handicap Relay Trophy, subject to the normal MMP relay and handicap rules.
