Moruya River.
Business this week has been on the improve, as angler confidence starts to increase with the turn of the seasons. I can’t believe that Xmas and a new year are only just around the corner!
In the Moruya river, the bream and flathead are starting to re-emerge from their relatively short winter slumber. The shallow, sun baked sand flats, will be their preferred locations this weekend. Try around the airport flats, back of the hole in the wall, in front of Malabar creek, under the town bridge and across from the hospital. Baits or smaller lure presentations will be the go to options this early in the season. The odd adage, that elephants eat peanuts, works well all year round, but particularly early season.
Up in the fresh reaches, local bass fishos are already finding holes with fish willing to play. The upper reaches are in desperate need of some rain fall to allow post spawn fish to move back up into the upper reaches of the Deua river.

Tuross River.
Tuross has been fishing well this week, with many anglers getting into nice fish. Flathead over the shallow sand and mud flat areas are particularly busy. There have been several mulloway hooked landed and lost in the systems abundance of known holes. Live bait or good quality dead squid baits will tempt the grey ghost to come and dance with you this time of year. Don’t overlook the deeper holes, as there will be a few stubborn fish that aren’t ready to move up onto the warmer shallows just yet.
Luderick fisherman are still catching a few fish using floats, nippers or green w**d also this week. String w**d can be the hardest part of this style of fishing to find. Once you find a patch, keep it to your self, as the don’t last long.
For the bass fishos, the upper reaches are producing a few early season fish. The upper reaches of this system are heavily affected by low water conditions. We are in desperate need of rain at the moment, both for the rivers and anyone that has live stock.

Rock and Beach.
The southerly winds we have had this week, have made fishing the beaches a real chore. No that are starting to ease off, expect to see more anglers along the coastline, chasing a few salmon and maybe an early season bream or whiting.
The Moruya breakwall will be holding most of the usual suspects of bream, flathead, trevally, salmon and Luderick.

Offshore.
I have been getting lots of reports from the snapper and flathead anglers of reasonable catches of fish. With most fish coming from the 15m+ mark of water.
With warm water conditions starting push down the coast more rapidly, the game crews will be setting up for a season of trolling lures and chasing both tuna and Marlin. Only time will tell. I can’t believe it was this time last year it was total chaos offshore with the tuna run we had. Fingers crossed they turn up again this year.

Moruya River.
If last weekends and this weeks trade has been anything to go by, then optimism is on the increase. As the weather improves, water temps rise, more and more people are starting to break out of last winters hibernation cycle, and are spending more time outside. I have seen plenty of optimistic people this past week, and it is encouraging to see.
River temps are slowly rising, which in turn will lead to an increase in fish activity. The winds we have had the last few days will change direction from that freezing southerly to a westerly then north easterly by Sunday. The will however be a bit on the strong side, so finding a sheltered spot, will be the key.
I would concentrate on the lower reaches of the river, airport flats, hole in the wall quarry wharf areas on a rising tide for the best chance at finding actively feeding fish.
Up in the fresh reaches, there have already been some nice bass caught since the season opened up at the start of the month. I will be heading upstream this weekend at some stage to my favourite holes, and chasing a few myself also. I’ll let you know how I go.

Tuross River.
The back lakes of the Tuross system are on the warm, and as such they are areas that see the biggest spike of flathead activity this time of year. Keep your lure presentations small still,as this will trigger more bites than big offerings early season. Once the water really warms up, you can start throwing big lures for big fish.
The lower reaches of the system from the mouth up towards four-ways, will be the better areas to look this weekend. For mulloway, look at the deeper holes, flathead, look at the edges created where the water changes depth and w**d beds, bream try the flats areas around nipper beds.
With the river levels low with little to no rain having fallen recently, the bass are finding it hard to move up from their post spawn locations. Start looking in the lower reaches where the fresh meets the salt for your chance at finding an early season bass.

Rock and Beach.
Salmon continue to be the stand out species along the coastline this past week, with the winds really being a deciding factor on which beach’s are best explored.
Moruya break wall is always worth a look, you may even see me down there this weekend throwing some big lures for a lurking mulloway 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻.
As the water temps start to climb along the coast, expect the bream and whiting to start appearing in the gutters close to the shore break. Worms or live nippers are a great bait for these locations.

Offshore.
There have been plenty of good snapper numbers reported in and around the 10-15m marks this week, with a mix of flathead and other reef species also making any anglers bags also.
The games end has been quiet this week, but we are hoping for a run of tuna like last year, as the water temps are looking similar to last year, but only time will tell.

We had a big drop of gear from Shimano Australia this week, so the shop is full of all the usual suspects, along with a few new items. There will be more coming from Daiwa next week, as I am yet to top existing stock lines and new items next week, stay tuned!!
The bait freezer was restocked this week also, so we have all your bat needs covered.

Moruya River.
Trade is starting to reflect the turn in the season, from the winter doldrums to the hope that spring offers. I am starting to see more anglers getting ready for a weekend session, either offshore or within the myriad of estuarine systems that we are blessed with along the coast.
The Moruya river is very slowly starting to wake, with the lower reaches benefitting from the warmer than usual sea temps. Flathead are traditionally the first to wake this time of year, as they move into the relative warmth of the sun baked shallow sand flats looking for the 1-2deg warmer water, of which Moruya has several good ones. The airport flats, Garlandtown and the back of the hole in the wall, are all areas close to the mouth, that get the benefit of that shallow quickly warming water. Small presentation lures, soft plastics in the 2.5” size range or hardbodies in the 50-60mm size range can all represent the type of bait they are looking for. Any of the usual baits will also work, but live nippers or sq**rt worms will prove better than frozen offerings.
Further stream the shallow flats area like the ones under the town bridge and those on the opposite bank from the hospital, that deep cold water nearby will be fish magnets as they quickly warm up.
Reports from the few Bass fishos that have been, are that the fish are there, low in the system ( given low water levels) and in great condition. Spinnerbaits, hardbody lures and soft plastics fished slow will all work. Given the clarity of the water, stealth will be your best course of attack. Keep a low profile, walk or paddle quietly and try be invisible.

Tuross River.
Much like Moruya, Tuross is also starting to wake from it short winter slumber. Tuross does have the advantage however, in the size of the system and the different types of water it has on offer. Tuross has several mud based lakes, that are shallow in nature, and that warm considerably faster the similar sand based flats. Borang and Bumbo, to be specific. These two lakes warm much fast than other shallow areas, as the dark substrate absorbers the suns energy faster than the more reflective, sand flats. This time of year, these areas should be on your radar for flathead, bream, whiting and even mulloway. The holes that these drain into are also worth exploring on a falling tide. 😉
The lower areas of the Tuross system are also starting to wake, with more bream, flathead and whiting starting to show, along with the ever present mullow.
There will be a population of fish that continue to hold in the deeper holes, so don’t overlook these as well.

Rock and Beach.
Salmon, as has been the norm this season, continue to be the main stay of the beach and rock scene. As the water temp continue to climb, expect to see the bream and whiting starting to become more prevalent. Mulloway are a tear round option in the gutters, with lures or live baits accounting for fish throughout the year.

Offshore.
The wind this weekend is going to playa big part in the accessibility offshore this weekend. With stable weather, rain wise on the forecast, 40kph winds that are forecast, could be the deciding factor for an offshore session. But we all know never to totally rely on what the BOM says.
