Combining weights with your body weight training is how you keep developing strength gains in exercises like the chin up .
The rule of thumb is only pick a weight where you will max out by 6 to 8 reps.
Any less it’s too heavy, if you can do more than 8 then it’s worth while adding a bit more weight. Use explosive power on the upward movement and slow and controlled on the downward movement and always going to full range. This will see your gains continue to increase. In both strength and size

A very useful technique to use to work the legs with the heaviest weight your hands can hold is to do slow 1 and 1/2 kettle bell squats .
This way the legs get the workout they need as well as maxing out your grip and whole upper body without the use of straps
How to get more out of a Tyson push-up . Add weight and keep it slow
Here are some of my favourite push ups that really challenge strength, balance and whole body connection. Throwing these in lets you really measure your strength progression as you just can’t do it unless you have
There some exercises that I do almost every workout. Why because you would have to do about 6 or 7 other exercises to hit every muscle in your biceps shoulders an back that this one exercise does in one go and teaches all the muscles how to work together rather than individually this produces true strength in movement. The two most powerful upper body exercises are chin ups / pull ups and Dips .
Performed correctly in perfect form the muscle development you get is absolutely
amazing
I get a lot of people in there 30s , 40s,50s , 60s and 70s talk to me about improving their health and strength and it seems to be the same conversation where only 1 % of people are actually prepared to make the changes to their lifestyle that will change the course of how they hope to age going forward.
The definition of ageing is the loss of muscle mass and bone density. The only thing that can reverse that loss is resistance training performed at a specific level otherwise you are just exercising not actually causing an adaptation of growth in your muscles. That’s why just being active isn’t going to have a huge impact on reversing the aging process. Is it better than sitting on the couch absolutely but you’re still going to loose all your muscles mass maybe just a little slower. The goal is to reverse it . The second point is the diet . Which actually has the biggest impact on your overall health. Unfortunately in Australia most people are eating their way to sickness and conditions that are slowly robbing them of the life they want, making the necessary changes to the diet are even more important than the way you exercise as no trainer no matter how good can’t out train a bad diet.
So the question you should be asking yourself is if I don’t change anything I’m currently doing where will my body and health be in 5 years time. You won’t stay as you are every thing will continue to deteriorate.
The benefits of compound exercises are so far reaching compared to isolation exercises there literally is no comparison
How we age is a choice as is everything in life .
I have known for a very long time just how I want to age .
As slowly as possible, being able to do the things I have loved doing all my life .
Without good health , Strength and mobility none of which would be possible. This is why I train the way I do , twice a week I perform exercises that keep my body not only strong but stronger, there in lies the secret, it’s not enough just to exercise if that exercise doesn’t improve the condition of your muscles. Then you must feed your body the best nutrient dense foods that you can and you need to do it day after day week after week until the end if you want to live a full and active life
