Expedition Kayaks

Lindsay & a bunch of his mates have some grand expedition plans on the horizon, and on Saturday he came out for a burn in the Audax.
With a stiff breeze and a lumpy sea it was a beaut set of conditions to paddle into, across and downwind, to gauge the boats' performance from all quarters in a very real ocean.
As long as you're up for it, our test paddles are the real deal, and our aim is to make sure nobody goes away with any doubts as to how our boats handle in the conditions they were designed to be padded in.

Something special paddling off the Cronulla beaches yesterday, a red ocean algae which seemed to attract a phenomenal amount of schooling Salmon. We paddled about 10km down to Wanda and back, and for most of it we were in the thick of the red bloom, as well as literally tens of thousands of fish.

There were heaps of fishos out trying to grab a bucket full, but nobody seemed to be catching anything, maybe the fish were too well fed on the algal nutrients?

Regardless, once again it was like being in the middle of a David Attenborough doco.

We’re lucky to live in a place smack bang in the middle of civilisation, where wild things are still thriving.

Along with the Tiderace Xcite, we reckon this is the very best Brit skeg boat we ever paddled, and this one is a beaut.

It's Valley's full carbon/kevlar layup, by Brit boat standards very light at 21kg, includes a Skegfoot & all hatch covers replaced with Kajak Sports covers.

The sharp ends of the keel were protected with Keel Ezy hence the bow & stern present in as-new condition, it has an electric Rule pump connected to a vacuum switch fitted amnd in good working order, and the skeg cable and slider have been replaced as new.

It's in incredibly good nick...!

A challenging and confronting day on the water for Franky & Dave today, something of a crash course for a committing trip in the Tropics that they start soon, without a huge amount of sea kayaking experience.

We tried to make it as real as possible with an unseasonal northerly gusting to 20kn and a lively sea state, with a proper crack at downwind, manoeuvring safely to one another in the stiff breeze and a series of rescues in the middle of the rough stuff.

Rob dropped by on his way north yesterday to try out the Think Zen against the Think Six, on a brisk winter's day with a ruffling westerly chopping things up and providing a nice sea for a demo paddle.
He paddles solo more often than not in a wild and unpredictable part of the country, and wanted to be sure the extra speed and glide that the Six provides over the Zen wouldn't come at the cost of too little reassuring stability to keep him relaxed.
We had two downwind runs over to Jibbon Beach, as well as a long stretch across to Shark Island with a beam sea and 15kn slapping against the side of the ski. In the space of 90 minutes he was able to assess both skis and make absolutely sure he was getting the right one for him.
Happily, there is now a stunning looking Celeste Green and white Six heading north along the Pacific Motorway and some coastal adventures.
