Ashtanga Yoga School on Blues Point Road, McMahon's Point, Sydney At NSY, we remain true to the integrity of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

Ashtanga is a profoundly powerful method of yoga, and its benefits are many - you will relax; detoxify; get a lean, strong, flexible and healthy body; feel more emotionally equipped to deal with life’s every day challenges; and enjoy a peaceful state of mind. Our classes are challenging but the environment is supportive and non-competitive. Our teachers are highly experienced and genuinely interested in your well-being. Try yoga, and your life will be transformed.

September Focus: Tapas
Spring time ~ “The art of cleansing and detoxing”!

Derived from the Sanskrit root tap, meaning “to burn” or “to make hot,” Tapas is the inner friction that burns away physical, mental, and emotional impurities.

The Art of Cleansing Body and Mind Systems

Patanjali directly addresses the transformative power of this practice in Sutra 2.43:

“Kaya indriya siddhir ashuddhi kshayat tapasah”

(Through the destruction of impurities by Tapas, perfection of the body and sense organs is attained.)

This month, observe where you can cultivate a bit more conscious heat in your life. Allow the discipline of your daily practice to burn away what no longer serves you, leaving behind a clear body, a steady mind, and an unshakeable spirit.

Abhyāsa: I show up continuously
Vairāgya: Non-attachment to the results

And together:

I give myself completely to the practice, while releasing my need to control its outcome.

… a profound foundation of Ashtanga Yoga

Prana and Apana – Ashtanga Workshop with Kai Rainer | Sunday 6th 11.00am - 1.00pm

Awakening the Breath in Practice
Breath is an integral element of Ashtanga Vinyasa and can profoundly reframe how we relate to our practice as a contemplative ritual. This workshop will examine the subtle relationship between the breath and the body by exploring the vayus (life force) – primarily the inhalation and exhalation, the prana and the apana. This encourages greater steadiness and ease, and can transform asana practice from something purely physical to deeply internal and meditative.

August Monthly Focus: Grounding through Samasthiti & Santosha

We can only start here and now.
In Ashtanga Yoga, Samasthiti (equal standing) is far more than a transition between postures—it is our home base. After every standing posture, we return to this center point. Each return offers a fresh opportunity to ‘ground; our feet on the mat, recalibrate our breath, and reconnect with the present moment.
Inside this physical centering lies the deeper practice of Santosha—contentment and accepting where we are right now. In a practice that can easily pull us toward the next posture, the next series, or a past version or ideal of our strength, Samasthiti invites us to pause. It asks: Can I be fully content with this body, in this breath, today?
When we drop the striving and meet ourselves on the mat with genuine sensitivity, we stop forcing the practice. We cultivate the mental quiet needed for our Yoga to unfold naturally and sustainably.
This August, as you step onto your mat, let every return to Samasthiti be a quiet act of Santosha—a grounding reminder that this breath, right here, is already complete.
