Sometimes the best moments are the ones that were never part of the plan.

Before Tinny Rally, there was just one bloke, a little boat and a stupid idea — to see how far he could travel down the Murray in a tinny.

There was shallow water.
Boat problems.
Questionable decisions.
Wrong turns.
And plenty of making it up as he went. 😂

But somewhere between Plan A falling apart and Plan B being invented on the spot, something pretty bloody special happened.

The Tinny Rally was invented.

But then the Murray casually throws THIS at you.

Before Tinny Rally existed, Dan decided to see what it was really like to travel a serious distance down the Murray in a tinny.

And somewhere along the way, he discovered it wasn’t just about how far you could go.

It was how special it was getting there.

Dan before Tinny Rally existed:

❌ Hadn’t done half the things he now tells everyone else to do
❌ Middle of winter
❌ Various problems and questionable decisions
✅ Little boat
✅ Murray River
✅ Went anyway 😂

It started with one bloke wondering whether you could travel a serious distance down the Murray in a tinny — and whether it would be as bloody good as he imagined.

So he went and found out.

Turns out it was even better… and that slightly stupid idea eventually became Tinny Rally.

A couple of days off grid. Just me, a little tinny and the Murray.

No real idea what was coming around the next bend.

And then I turned one corner and found… a brewery. 🍺

That was the magic of the original trip. Moving through the landscape by tinny, camping beside the river, pulling into old river towns and never quite knowing what you'd stumble across next.

It was meant to be an experiment to see how far I could travel down the Murray in a little boat.

Turns out, it became the seed of Tinny Rally.

People keep asking me how Tinny Rally actually started.

The answer is basically: one little tinny, the Murray River, the middle of winter, and a fairly stupid idea.

Before there were rallies, crews, hundreds of boats or any real organising behind it, I wanted to find out whether you could actually travel a serious distance down the Murray in a tinny — and whether it would be the kind of adventure I imagined it could be.

So I went and found out.

Alone.

There was shallow water, problems with the boat, some questionable decisions and plenty of moments where I had absolutely no idea what was around the next bend.

But that trip proved something.

Travelling the Murray this way was bloody special.

And it became the seed of Tinny Rally.

We’ve just finished a brand new 25-minute film telling the story of that original trip and how this whole ridiculous thing began.
