🔥 The last Four Weeks of Adventure at 1st Merimbula Scouts! 🌿

It’s been another action-packed four weeks at 1st Merimbula Scouts, with plenty of practical skills, teamwork and, of course, a bit of fun along the way!

🌿 Week 5 – Leave No Trace
We kicked things off by learning about the Leave No Trace principles, exploring how we can enjoy the outdoors while minimising our impact on the environment. From respecting nature to leaving campsites better than we found them, our Scouts put some important outdoor ethics into practice.

🔥 Week 6 – Campfires & Fire Safety
Next up was one of those classic Scouting skills — building a campfire! The Scouts learnt about safe fire practices, choosing a suitable fire site, building different fire structures and, most importantly, how to safely extinguish a fire when the job is done.

💧 Week 7 – Finding & Filtering Water
We then turned our attention to survival situations and water. The Scouts explored where water might be found in the outdoors and why untreated water can be unsafe to drink. They then put their problem-solving skills to work with a hands-on water filtration exercise.

🍳 Week 8 – Camp Cooking!
And finally, a favourite at Merimbula Scouts — camp cooking! The Scouts put their outdoor cooking skills to the test, preparing food over their choice of campfire, camp stove or gas cooker!
Discovering that cooking outdoors is always better when you’ve had a hand in making it yourself. The night highlighted the youth members independence and creativity with a few brave choices including meatballs, fried rice, pancakes to name a few.

Four weeks gone, memories, laughs and putting skills into practice, and of course plenty of classic Scouting fun. We can’t wait to see you next week for the final night of the term.⚜️🏕️

Aaaaaaaannndd…. Can’t forget to mention the amazing work that two of our Cubs Tyler and William have put in. Pictured together and receiving a double Lefty handshake. These two boys both achieved the final prerequisite for their Peak Award. The Grey Wolf award is the highest achievement attainable in the Cub Section and these two boys have climbed that peak over the last 3 years and now will
be awarded this honour Peak award in the weeks coming. Such an outstanding achievement. 🐺

Meet at the hall next week because it’s time for a Celebration of a Thriller of a term before we head off on Holiday! 😎🎶

So Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, grab your Sunglasses at Night and get Into the Groove — because I’m So Excited and we Just Can’t Get Enough of Scout adventures!

🕺 Joeys: Get Physical, Push It and Bust a Move with giant Twister and the legendary Nut Push Challenge. It Takes Two… or maybe a whole Mob! 😂

🥾 Scouts: Walk This Way and head out Dancing in the Dark… or on a night hike! 🔦🌙

🎉 Cubs: You Spin Me Round as you choose which way to go — join the Joeys for some retro fun or Walk This Way with the Scouts on their night hike. It’s My Prerogative — the choice is yours! 🪩🥾

👕 NO UNIFORM! Express Yourself in your best ’80s style — neon, leg warmers, sweatbands, scrunchies, fluoro, double denim, tracksuits, big hair, Lycra and plenty of attitude!

🍍 Hungry Like the Wolf? Bring an optional retro plate to share — fairy bread, cocktail frankfurts, cheese & cabana toothpicks, cob loaf, party pies, sausage rolls, devilled eggs, chocolate crackles, jelly, lamingtons or frog-in-a-pond!

So Let the Music Play, get Footloose, Pump Up the Jam and enjoy the Rhythm of the Night. We’ll be Walking on Sunshine and hopefully having Sweet Dreams about the holidays afterwards!

🌿 Joey Survival Shelter Challenge! 🛖🌙
Our Joeys headed into the bush at Noonameena Scout Camp for a hands-on survival challenge — build a shelter using only what they could find around them!

Before building, we learnt why shelter matters — keeping us warm and dry, protecting us from wind and weather, and giving us a safer place to rest. 🌧️💨🥶

The Joeys learnt to LOOK UP, LOOK DOWN and LOOK AROUND before choosing a safe location, checking for falling branches, wet ground, insects and other hazards.

Then it was time to build! Using fallen sticks, branches, bark and leaves, they worked together to create two impressive bush shelters — without damaging living trees or vegetation. 🌿

We also talked about insulation from the cold ground, staying with our buddies and what we could improve next time.

Lots of problem-solving, teamwork and creativity — and judging by their shelters, I think our Joeys might actually survive the night! 😂🛖

Learning by doing at its best! ⚜️

🔥 Campfire Night at Joey Scouts! 🔥

Our Joeys put their fire safety learning into action — collecting sticks, building and lighting a fire, and of course cooking s’mores! 🍫🔥

Over the last two weeks they’ve completed these I-statements:

🔥 I can strike a match.

🪵 I can collect sticks for preparing a campfire.

🔥 I can be safe around a campfire.

🛑 I can demonstrate Stop, Drop and Roll.

🍫 I can cook a snack on a fire.

🏕️ I can demonstrate the correct way to build a safe fireplace in the bush.

🧯 I understand the basic dangers of fire and how to be safe around them.

🔺 I know the basic elements needed to make a fire.

A great couple of weeks of learning by doing — finished perfectly with s’mores around the fire! 🔥⚜️
