Let’s talk self-defence. 🥋
Many people think self-defence is only about striking back or blocking a punch, but there are other important parts about protecting yourself that is often overlooked.
In real-life situations, being pushed, shoved, or losing your balance can happen quickly. In those moments, your first priority is knowing how to protect yourself from injury.
Just as important is knowing what to do when you are down. Learning how to recover by regaining your position, is a real and valuable self-defence skill.
These practical skills can make a genuine difference, and they are something everyone should learn, practise, and build confidence in.
A common misconception is that self-defence is only about knowing how to fight, but in reality, it’s about awareness, protection, and knowing how to keep yourself safe and protected in all situations.

FAQ: What kind of karate do you teach?
At Shindo Karate Association, our curriculum is based on traditional Shotokan Karate.
Operating since 1996 in Melbourne’s western suburbs, we are proud to teach a style that combines strong traditional foundations with modern fitness and practical self-defence training.
Our approach goes beyond physical technique. We also place great importance on the traditional values of karate, including respect, discipline, and the pursuit of character perfection.
This means students develop not only strength, coordination, and skill, but also confidence, focus, and resilience that carry into everyday life.
Some fun moments from inside the dojo with our youngest students.
A great way to keep warm, stay active, and build confidence during the cooler season. 🤛🏼
Attending tournaments is not just about winning — it is about learning. 🥋
Tournaments give students the chance to gain experience, build confidence, and develop composure under pressure. They also teach something just as important: good sportsmanship.
Respect for opponents, humility in victory, grace in defeat, and the courage to step onto the floor and give it your best, all play an important part in the martial arts journey.
Every tournament is a chance to grow, improve, and represent the true spirit of karate.

Strong technique starts with strong foundations.
Here, Sensei Ray works with the class on perfecting Haiwan-uke (back forearm block), with a focus on stance, balance, and correct technique.
These foundations are a key part of karate training — refining the basics is what builds control, confidence, and attention to detail over time.

A huge congratulations to our two sempai senior students on earning their 1st Dan earlier this month. 🥋
This is a special achievement and one that reflects the hard work, discipline, and determination they have shown throughout their training journey.
Reaching 1st Dan is a significant milestone in karate, and we are so proud to see them rewarded for their dedication and perseverance.
Congratulations again on this well-earned success — a fantastic achievement for you both!
