Years of hard work, commitment, and dedication to training put them in great stead for their grading. Throughout the day, they maintained their intensity, focus, and technique — earning their place as well-deserving members of the Yudansha.

A special congratulations also goes to Sempai Joshua, who regularly trains with us as a visiting student and successfully achieved his Black Belt alongside our students.

Reaching this milestone is a tremendous achievement, but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their martial arts journey.

MEET THE SENSEI: SHIHAN RAY VELLA 🥋

With more than 45 years of teaching and training experience, Shihan Ray brings an incredible depth of knowledge, discipline, and dedication to every class at Derrimut Heath Dojo, located in Hoppers Crossing.

A 5th Dan in Shotokan Karate and 2nd Dan in Ryukyu Kobudo, Shihan Ray is also a co-founder of the Shindo Karate Association and has helped guide countless students on their journey to becoming confident, disciplined martial artists and accomplished black belts.

His teaching goes far beyond technique. Shihan Ray is passionate about helping students build self-belief, focus, resilience, and strong character both inside and outside the dojo.

Alongside karate and kobudo, his interests include travel, cycling, and meditation — all reflecting his belief in continual growth and balance.

His favourite quote says it best: “Your mind is your only limit.”

We are incredibly fortunate to have Shihan Ray leading and inspiring our Derrimut Heath community.
