It can be scary to play around with your fuelling with T1D, but once you get there, you’ll never look back.

When starting out, I’d recommend:
-Minimising IOB
-Consistent training time (morning is often kinder to BGLs)
-Consistent training type. More consistency = more predictability.

And when you’re ready, start by slowly implementing small amounts of carb.

Save it so it’s there when you need it. And if you want this built around your training specifically, drop FUEL in the comments.

Your blood sugar climbing thanks to a hard session is one of the more confusing parts of training with type 1. It’s one of those ones where you feel like you did all the right things, only to be unpleasantly surprised by an unexpected high.

In case you haven’t been told, not all exercise pulls your levels down. The harder and shorter the effort, the more likely it pushes them up instead.

Yes, this is often with things like weight lifting and sprints, but it can also happen with aerobic sports and training (which is where you really crack the proverbials with T1D).

I’ve broken down why it happens, and what to do about it, in the carousel. Swipe through and it’ll make a lot more sense the next time it happens to you.

Save this for your next game or heavy session.

Type 1 diabetes, exercise, and protein.

It’s not all about big muscles and smelly 💨

Worth giving this one a try if you find yourself stuck on the roller coaster - but swipe for your warnings... We don’t want a gut related accident!

BGL rise during exercise make you feel like you’re taking crazy pills?

There’s a few things it could be, and it’s not always just food or insulin.

Everyone’s talking about Amylin like it’s the missing piece.

Amylin to a T1D influencer is like Cortisol to a fitness influencer. Unnecessary noise dressed as intelligence.
Swipe to understand why — and where your energy is actually better spent.

Frustrated that your BGL behaves early in a session… until it doesn’t?

It’s a pain in the a**. I get it.
And it’s incredibly common in the people I work with.

However once you understand why, it actually makes sense.

Your muscles run on glycogen (carbs) first.
As those stores start dropping — especially with increased insulin sensitivity — your BGL can follow.

That doesn’t mean you’re unfit.
It doesn’t mean you planned badly.
It means you’re training with type 1.

Training with T1D isn’t just discipline and carbs.
It’s understanding how your body works.

Understand the why.
Then structure the how.

*of course BGL will also vary based on factors such as IOB, whether you have eaten, temperature, etc.

I have all my clients do this, T1D or not.

Using RPE and RIR is a tried and tested method to keep your training on track and manage the fluctuations life throws your way - and I don’t have to tell a group of T1Ds about that!

We do want to look at numbers such as weight lifted, distance run etc over time as a metric for overall programming - but don’t get too caught up on that in the day-to-day.

Another way you can make sure the T1D curve balls don’t chip away at your motivation.

Trust the process. It will work.
