Part 2 of my tribute to Syd Sherrin.
My grandfather was selected as an official referee at the 1938 British Empire Games .
As Melbourne’s Commonwealth Games this month is in Scotland, the events are being watched by millions of Australians at home.
I am sure that he would have wished our athletes all the best of luck, and to do our nation proud.
Syd started his leather working apprenticeship in 1903 under the tutoring of his uncle Tom Sherrin, at the sporting goods factory of TW Sherrin P/L located at 32 Wellington St Collingwood .
Syd became managing director of the company in 1912 manufacturing footballs, cricket balls and high quality boxing gloves.
Many of the bouts at the 1938 Empire Games used TW Sherrin boxing gloves.

My grandfather, John Syd Sherrin 1888 - 1941, was selected as an official boxing referee for the 1938 British Empire Games, later to be renamed the Commonwealth Games.
As Melbourne’s 2026 Commonwealth Games is about to be hosted in Scotland next week, let us pause to celebrate this wonderful appointment to a sportsman that was so highly and widely respected throughout Australia.
As a proud grandson, I would like to share with you his sporting achievements in my next post.

Lenny is an 11 year old who in 2023 picked up a double bacterial infection and from this, ended up being very unwell. His hair fell out and he was diagnosed with Alopecia.
Lenny is raising awareness for childhood alopecia and all money raised will be donated to AAAF - Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation -Wigs for Kids.
I have donated a personalised Syd Sherrin football to support the cause.
Lenny is doing magical things and is a force to be reckoned with. Check out the link below to donate and support Lenny and all the other children affected by this!

40 Illawarra Road, Hawthorn….. The house where we grew up.
Many parties and Christmas’ were enjoyed here. A real family home with my brother Geoff and sister Isobel. We still have a lot of cherished memories from the time spent in this house.
On the weekend, my brother and I went and had a look at the house as it is now. It has been renovated so much since we left in 1976.
The house goes to auction later this month.

My Great Grandfathers brother, Tom Sherrin, was one of six directors of Britannia FC that founded the magnificent Collingwood Football Club in 1892. For his service to the club, he was awarded the very first Number One membership of this historic football club.
Six generations later, my grandson, Tom Sherrin, was very impressed to see this amazing part of his family history.
