Knock in your bat properly. At least 4 to 6 hours with a mallet before it sees a real ball. This compresses the willow fibres and protects the bat from cracking.
Apply raw linseed oil. A light coat on the face, edges and back every season keeps the moisture in the willow and extends the life of your bat significantly.
Check your grip. A worn grip affects your shot making more than most players realise. A fresh grip costs very little and makes a real difference to your control at the crease.

Batting first after losing the toss, Hawthorn Boroondara Senior Men posted 8/144 from 23 overs in difficult conditions. Captain Channa Gunawardana led from the front with a composed retired-not-out 50, while Jeff Saker added 23, Sourav Kirankumar made 22, and Mohaneesh Pitre chipped in with 18.
