Our intermediate tennis teams competed in the state finals on Friday 🎾 The boys performed admirably, reaching the semi-finals 👏 Congratulations go to the girls who got home in a nail-biting finish decided by the last point of the day, winning a sudden-death tie break 5-4! Well done to all 🏆

So sad to hear of the passing of one of Australia’s former greats, Mal Anderson.

Ranked number 2 amateur in 1957 and 1958, Mal won the US Open as an unseeded player in 1957 and was a finalist in 1958. He also reached the AO final in 1958 and again in 1972, the latter after almost a decade out of the game 🎾

I had the pleasure of meeting him toward the end of his career and was thrilled when he asked if I’d play doubles with him at an American Express tournament in New Hampshire. Learnt so much about the game that week and was even more thrilled when we won the tournament 🏆

Like so many of the players of that generation, Mal worked and played hard, but was one of the nicest guys and incredibly generous with his time and advice.
