Due to growing demand, we’re considering opening 1–2 additional ongoing training sessions on Sundays for the remainder of Term 3 and throughout Term 4.

Proposed session times:
⏰ 10:00am–11:00am
⏰ 11:00am–12:00pm

Also Wednesday mornings 8am-9am

(Times may vary in term 4)

These sessions are perfect for athletes wanting more personalised coaching, with options for:

🏀 1:1 training
🏀 Small groups (up to 4 athletes)

A while ago I was reading a book and I came across a fascinating Japanese concept called Mushin.

HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY THRIVE WITHOUT THINKING?

In Japanese culture, there is a beautiful word to describe this phenomenon: mushin, which is often translated as “no mind.”

Here is the definition of mushin in practice from the Shotokan Times:

Mushin is achieved when the mind is free of random thoughts, free of anger, free of fear, and particularly free of ego. It applies during combat and/or other facets of life. When mushin is achieved during combat, there is an absence of loose or rambling thoughts. It leaves the practitioner free to act and react without hesitation. He reacts according to all of the study and training that has brought him to this point. Relying on not what you think should be your next move but on what your trained, instinctive, subconscious reaction directs you to do.

When I read this, I immediately thought about basketball.

The best players don’t play their best because they’re thinking more than everyone else. They play their best because they’ve trained so well that, under pressure, they don’t need to think.

When you catch the ball with two seconds left, there isn’t time to analyse every option. You simply react.

If you’ve spent thousands of repetitions working on your footwork, your shooting mechanics, your ball handling, your passing and your defence, your body already knows what to do.

That’s Mushin.

It isn’t about having an empty mind. It’s about having a mind that is free from fear, doubt and ego, allowing your preparation to take over.

This is why we place such a huge emphasis on fundamentals at Hustle Hoops.

Every form shot.
Every jump stop.
Every pivot.
Every defensive slide.
Every weak-hand dribble.
Every closeout.

These aren’t just drills - they’re building your subconscious. Every repetition is programming your body to make the right decision automatically.

When the pressure comes, you don’t rise to the occasion by chance. You fall back on your training.

The players who consistently practise the fundamentals eventually stop forcing the game. They don’t hesitate. They don’t panic. They simply play.

That’s the goal.

Train so well that your body can perform without your mind getting in the way.

Master the fundamentals until they become instinct. That’s the path to Mushin.
