Everyone knows revenue. What you invoiced. What hit the account.

But gross profit? That’s what’s left after you pay for materials, labor, subbies.
Most tradies don’t track it.

They run off revenue. Check the bank balance. Hope there’s profit in there somewhere.
But hope doesn’t pay rent.

Gross profit does.

You’ll carry everything for a while, until you build structure.

The slog from zero to 1.5 million is hard yakka. You’re busy and you carry a lot.

From 1.5 to 2.5 million is where most burn out. Or worse, go broke.

But at 4, 5 million plus, it actually gets easier. You share the load, so you carry less.

Why? Because your revenue, provided you’re running a profitable show, is finally big enough to cover a great team. And a great team takes the weight off your shoulders.

But hear me on this. Growth without structure is madness. Chasing bigger numbers with no structure underneath just means you carry more, not less.

Because the goal was never just a bigger business. The goal is a business that creates a lifestyle. Time with your family. Some freedom you never had back when you had a job.

That’s the difference. At the bottom you carry it all. But if you built right, the business carries you.

You’ve got balls starting a building company.

People don’t realise how hard it actually is.

Not everyone’s built for it. YOU ARE.

But if I could give you one piece of advice, the one thing that would’ve saved me years of pain, it’s this.

Know your numbers.

Not roughly. Not a gut feel. Actually know them.

Know what it costs you to open the doors every morning before you’ve swung a hammer.
Know your real margin on every job, while you’re building it, not six months later when the money’s already gone.
Know if you’re actually making a profit or just turning over a lot of money and going backwards.

Because here’s the truth. Most builders I help are flat out, busy as hell, turning over millions, and dead broke underneath it.
They don’t have a building problem. They’ve got a numbers problem.

The day you stop guessing and start knowing your numbers is the day everything will change.

Get across your numbers. It’s the difference between a job that owns you and a business that pays you.
