Dr. Alister MacKenzie didn't believe in hazards for punishment's sake - he believed in hazards that made you think. A century on, that philosophy still decides more matches here than any other single feature of the course.

In 1926, one of golf's greatest course architects spent several days walking the fairways at Cheltenham. Dr Alister MacKenzie, the visionary behind Augusta National and Cypress Point, studied the course and concluded that "little more is required to make it a magnificent golf course."

One hole that particularly caught his eye was the 17th. MacKenzie described it as one of the finest three-shot holes he had come across. Nearly a century later, it remains one of the course's standout challenges.
