This post isn’t about Martial Arts…

There’s a little girl who lives around the corner from the gym she’s in primary school.

Her dad cheated on her mother, moved to the Gold Coast with another woman, and never returned to see his daughter. It’s been a few years.

This little girl often goes to school without an adequate lunch. She walks a long way each day, to a different suburb, just to get to school because her mum tirelessly works two jobs, desperately trying to survive.

She has such a deep sadness in her eyes that everyone notices.

After a few years, her dad sent her one small gift.

The little girl showed every single person in her class the toy with so much joy, mixed with sadness. She kept repeating the words “My dad sent me this… see, he loves me”

She walks around the school so desperate for a little love and attention because she has a big hole in her heart. Most don’t notice her, most don’t even know she exists.

Next time you complain about losing a competition, please remember that some kids can’t even afford to train.

Next time you complain about traffic, remember that some kids walk a long way alone in the cold while we drive past them.

Next time you complain about family or friends, remember that there’s a little girl who would give anything for her father just to look at her.

If we become world champions, make it big, become famous and have all the money in the world, but can’t see past ourselves enough to stretch out our hand and help another person, then we may have achieved a lot financially and socially, but very little when it comes to the quality of our character.

Look around at the world. People are suffering.

If you help them when you can, then in my personal opinion, you have achieved much more than any championship, any medal, and something far greater than my black belt.

Life is much bigger than me and you.

It’s about us. 🙏🏻

This is my purple belt Daniel. A little over a year ago Daniel came into the gym and sat in the corner. He was clearly upset. Upon chatting to him, he shared something that shocked me. He said that he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.. and that it had spread to the bones. He got teary and very emotional as he spoke about wanting to be there for his little boy. It broke all of our hearts and moved the whole room.

He began very heavy multiple treatments which still continues today. When he started, he said to me “Coach, I’m going to beat this, and im going to compete again, I promise.”

It was extremely hard. He had lots of side effects, and although he tried to hide it as best as he could... we could all see he suffered alot. But one year later things are actually beginning to look hopeful for him. Its working and there is hope. And even with all of his struggles, he has registered to compete at the Australian championships this weekend. What a legend.

If you wait for everything in your life to be good before you are happy... then you will never be happy. Because life is really hard and every rose worth picking comes with thorns. Whatever we go through, do your best to squeeze as much joy as you can out of today. Maybe having some happiness in your life, isnt a circumstance... maybe its a choice. And my student Daniel taught his teacher how to make that choice.

Pain changed him. But hope brought him back.

Mohammad from our affiliate G FORCE absolutely smashed it first round tonight with a slick submission! Zak blythe from AET HQ took control and Dominated the fight both standing and on the ground for a super inspiring win. Eoin from our affiliate RESILIENCE had an impressive victory. Patrick from our affiliate PROGRESSION MMA showed great skill with an awesome win!. Raph from our affiliate RAILS MMA and Combat 1 fought the Pro co-main event and won first round looking awesome out there.

Ryan breich from AET HQ fought as the main event and won by ground and pound in the very first round, and looked absolutely unstoppable.
Last but not least, our very own Jake Matthews was overseas at the same time and totally dominated all 3 rounds in the UFC like an absolute legend.

Well done to Amir... it wasn’t your night tonight, but victory is so much sweeter when you’ve known defeat. We will get it back on the next 1.

Alot of time was put into this fight camp. But slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.

Well done to from our affiliate for an amazing finish. Mohammed bekai from our affiliate for 3 rounds of domination against a tough opponent. Will breich for an absolute war and victory, and in my opinion the fight of the night. And to Ryan, a tough win against a skilled opponent. I’m proud of you the most. Not because of the fight... but because after your last loss, I saw the best changes in you. Winning is easy, changing is difficult.. and most people never achieve it. You humbly took the difficult road and are becoming a man i can be proud of. Well done 👏
