A heartfelt thank you to all of you for your rallying words of support on our post this last week. It's been an incredibly tough time, and all of your comments and shares have lifted us up and given us hope!
Since our last post, the sign has been erected out the front. It is a ridiculous size and it covers almost half of our street facing, making us appear closed.
Just a reminder: WE ARE OPEN!
Trade has almost halved for us over the last 48 hours since the sign went up, so to say we appreciate all of your support is an understatement. It's going to be a very tough few months ahead.
Tomorrow should be a celebratory time for Eagle, with the Yarra City Council's Q***r Lives Here campaign launching from the front of our shop, it's all quite disconcerting to be honest βΉ
The Age reached out to us for comment last week about the sale of the building that houses our store. Hereβs an excerpt from their article:
"World-renowned fe**sh shop Eagle Leather will have to start looking around for a new eyrie after its landlord put the Abbotsford building up for sale... Itβll be a wrench for Eagle Leather, which has been selling and manufacturing leatherwear on Hoddle Street since 1994. Itβs operated out of No. 80 since 2010.
For Eagle Leather itβs the old story about gentrification, compounded by the significant but fragile long-term q***r subculture in Abbotsford. But it also has a link to the areaβs working-class past, which was dominated by tanneries. Eagle is one of the few remaining businesses in Abbotsford to process leather. Overseas shoppers β some famous β regularly drop in to Eagle Leather, which is on an LGBQTI tourist map, writing their signatures on the shopβs brick wall."
