One of my favourite drills- it has some very good technical advantages. Stroke continuity -controlled connection.

The recovery, entry, catch, pull, body rotation and kick should work as one coordinated sequence — not as separate movements with unnecessary pauses between them. That’s the important distinction:
The drill teachers stroke continuity and how effectively each phase connects to the next.
The goal isn’t simply to move faster. It’s to find the rhythm where technique remains controlled while unnecessary losses in forward velocity are reduced.
A technically efficient swimmer doesn’t just perform each phase well. They connect the phases well.

That’s where smoothness, rhythm and efficiency come from.
Happy swimming and keep it simple! 🏊‍♂️

From the outside, they’re all doing the same thing:
Down the lane swimming.
Turn.Back again.
But inside every lane… there’s a completely different story.
Maybe that’s why I don’t like defining a swimmer only by strength or speed.

Prahran pool…Melbourne.
Walked into the pool and had the whole pool to myself. Can’t complain about that.
Training looks a little different for me these days.
Started swimming again 6 weeks a go…after 3-4 months …I had some time away from the pool.
Swimming fitness is surprisingly specific and you don’t lose it all at once.
For most swimmers, the timeline looks roughly like this:
5–7 days: Very little aerobic fitness is lost, but the water may start feeling slightly unfamiliar.
10–14 days: You can begin to notice a drop in aerobic conditioning and your ability to hold pace.
3–4 weeks: A more obvious decline in endurance, speed and feel for the water.
6+ weeks: Significant detraining. You haven’t “forgotten” how to swim, but your conditioning and efficiency need rebuilding.
The important point: swimming fitness is not just cardiovascular fitness.
You lose feel for the water, stroke timing, coordination and the ability to produce force efficiently when you stop swimming.
And the good news?
You regain fitness much faster than you lost it, particularly if you have a strong training history. Your previous training creates adaptations that help you rebuild.
Fitness doesn’t disappear overnight. But feel for the water can. 🫤🏊‍♂️
Keep it simple. You’ll be glad you did. 🏊‍♂️

A good coach understands that a swimmer cannot concentrate on ten things at once.

Give them one or two key things to focus on — and let them do those things well.

Don’t overload them with information.
Don’t keep changing the message.
Don’t fill the session with unnecessary drills just to look busy.

One clear instruction.
One focused correction.
Repeat. Feel it. Understand it. Own it.

The best coaches are not the ones who say the most.
They are the ones who know what matters most.
Less noise. More focus. Better swimming.

How privileged I feel to coach Elly🏊‍♂️
A gifted young swimmer, a beautiful personality, curious, engaged and always willing to learn. I’m sure she will carry that same attitude into her education and everything she chooses to do.

For a coach, it is a true privilege to share knowledge with such a swimmer — and an even greater to coach an international swimmer like Elly.

The best part of coaching is not just watching a swimmer become faster — it’s watching a young person grow, believe in themselves and discover what they are capable of. 🏊‍♂️
See you in summer!

Some people see a busy pool.

I see commitment.

Great attendance and we celebrate it because every swimmer here is writing another chapter in their own story.

Every person in this photo had a choice .Stay home… or show up. They chose to invest in themselves.🏊‍♂️👏👍💪🏼

You already know how to swim.
Why does race day suddenly make it feel like you’ve forgotten everything you’ve practised?
You’ve trained for months, done the kilometres, worked on your technique.
Then the gun goes…Suddenly your stroke changes.
Your catch disappears, legs sink, turnover speeds up, heart rate climbs.

I’ve seen it hundreds of times! What most swimmers don’t realise…Your nervous system doesn’t perform best under stress. When anxiety rises, your brain isn’t trying to make you swim faster. It’s trying to keep you safe.It switches from controlled, efficient movement to familiar movement.
That’s why swimmers often lose their rhythm, shorten their stroke, and start fighting the water. It’s not because they’ve forgotten their technique. It’s because their nervous system has reverted to an older movement pattern.

The solution isn’t simply swimming more kilometres. It’s teaching your nervous system that efficient swimming!

That’s why my sessions include much more than fitness or drills.

🏊‍♂️Mobility, your body can access the positions needed for an efficient stroke.

🏊‍♂️Purposeful drills that build movement patterns your brain can rely under pressure.

🏊‍♂️Sighting practice long before race day, so lifting your head doesn’t destroy your body position in open waters

🏊‍♂️Pace awareness, because starting too hard is one of the quickest ways to overload the nervous system and lose technique.
The goal is to keep swimming efficiently when your heart is racing, you’re surrounded by other swimmers, the water is rough, and your brain is screaming, “Go harder!”
The best race-day performances don’t come from a stronger body alone.
They come from a nervous system that has learned to stay calm, organised, and efficient under pressure.

🏊 Train your brain and trust your stroke.
🏊 Let the speed come from efficiency—not panic.
